Thermoelastic stress analysis is a relatively new technique for the experimental estimation of the stresses produced by the application of dynamic loading to a structure. In many cases it is convenient to apply the method to structures that are undergoing fatigue testing, and the rapidity of the technique means that it has great potential, both in a trouble-shooting role and as a design or theoretical model validation tool applicable to a wide range of engineering industries. Seven of the nine chapters in this book are based upon research using a commercial system (SPATE) which is described in detail in Chapters 1 and 3. For readers unfamiliar with thermoelastic stress analysis, the book provides a straightforward introduction to the technique. The method is placed in its historical context and the basic principles of infra-red detectors are described. The thermoelastic technique is also compared with more established approaches to experimental stress analysis. Calibration procedures are discussed and several examples of stress distributions generated from engineering structures are presented to show the effectiveness of the method. It also gives a detailed description of the principles of the deformation mechanisms which occur when solid materials are subjected to applied loads. Techniques and empirical data for the thermal analysis of strain are presented for a variety of materials and load regimes.
