Smith (Boston) edition. A beatiful reproduction of what almost seems to be a training manual. I was fascinated by the variety of punishments desribed for (p. 145) disobeying orders. Deserters were shot - see diagram on page 158. Section on the army mule. The Charles W. Redd illustrations are worth the price of admission. Cond : Black cover has gilt lettering and is embossed. Part of the Collectors Library series. End-papers are patterned. Page edges are gilt. Comes with its own ribbon page-marker. Brilliantly clean, correct and collectible ! Quote (p. 202) : " In the later years of the war, when large bounties were being paid by town, city, and State governments, to encouragement enlistments, these recruits were often addressed as `bounty-jumpers' by the evil disposed among the old members.
