Full information where further reading and visiting is available. ## ## THE SILK INDUSTRY: A silk industry first recorded in China about 2600 BC, its secrets spreading along the Silk Road to reach Constantinople in AD 550. By the fourteenth century, it had established itself in England. The earliest centres of the English silk industry were Spitalfields, Norwich and Canterbury, which later benefited from the arrival of the Dutch and Huguenot silk workers. In 1718, John Lombe discovered the secret of the Italian throwing machines and built a water-powered silk mill at Derby, beginning the factory system. In the 1820s, the French Jacquard loom began to supersede the old drawloom, greatly increasing the number of designs. In the 1830s, power looms were used first to weave plain coarse spun silks. With the gradual removal of tariff protection, the silk industry had to struggle for survival and from 1824 onwards, its progress was erratic, the silk-throwing industry reaching its zenith around 1850. The decline began With Cobden's Free Trade Treaty of 1860 and the advent of artificial silk. After that, apart from a brief interlude of relative prosperity in the late 1920s and 1930s, the industry gradually diminished. ## ## Shire Books by Bloomsbury Publishing, a book publishing company based in London, England, and formerly by Shire Publications Ltd. and Osprey Publishing. Shire offers low-priced, concise non-fiction paperbacks on a wide range of subjects. Shire books cover antiques and collectables, motoring and rural history, archaeology and Egyptology, architecture, industrial history and many other topics.## ## They were founded in 1962 by John Rotheroe, the company based in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire. The first book published by Shire Publications was Discovering East Suffolk, a 24-page guide to the county through a series of five motoring routes and a gazetteer of the main towns and villages. They were given away to visitors via coach operators, local churches and tourist information points. The book was successful, and Shire publishers decided to sell the second edition because free copies were being sold, setting the template for the future of Shire. Over the following years, Shire expanded its Discovering series and launched several new series, including Lifelines, Shire Albums, Shire Archaeology and Shire Egyptology. ## ## In 2008, Shire began a revamp of its list. It announced that the former Shire series, including Life Lines, Shire Garden History and History in Camera, would be absorbed into a new series called Shire Library, which would retain and expand on the numbering system used by the old Album series, which has long formed the backbone of the Shire Library. ## ### INTERNATIONAL BUYERS: Please Note.
