Perera recalls his upbringing in a (not overly religious) Sephardic Jewish family, living in Guatemala. ('Why Guatemala? Father never explained this to my satisfaction') He takes us through his early years: the family drapery business; school and the bullying of both him and certain teachers; the discovery of sex; his friends. After spending some years in USA, he returns to find Guatemala in the middle of revolution, his own family not untouched by the casual killings. Victor Haim Perera (1934 - 14 June 2003) was an author and journalist primarily concerned with Latin America and Sephardic Jewry. He was best known for his history of the Sephardic Jews, The Cross and The Pear Tree (1995), which traced the path of his own family from 15th-century Spain to 20th-century Guatemala. Ref UUU 1.
