The construction of a new, expanded, visual arts museum is a civic occasion to celebrate. First, it will provide a scholarly resource for the development of a visually based,socio-historic humanities curricula which, then, can be promulgated by means of an effective outreach program to area schools and special needs communities. Second, it will signal the institution's readiness, administratively and academically, to accept the responsibility for collecting, preserving and exhibiting the major "treasures" amassed through the collective enlightenment of the connoisseurs in its region of the state. During the past fifty formative years, the Boca Raton Museum of Art and its small circle of artists, collectors, supporters and enthusiasts have contributed over 3,000 works of art and, thereby, have established the broad narrative of its permanent collection. Foremost, among these contributors, have been Dr. and Mrs. John J. Mayers who bequeathed to the Museum, not only their enviable personal collection of late 19th and early 20th Century European and American Art, but also the financial means to conserve and to enhance it. The European masterpieces contained within this collection, form the principle caché around which the Museum has designed its in-house and outreach programming. In the process of evolving collection and exhibition strategies for the new Museum, the curatorial staff has singled out and focused on this portion of the permanent collection to raise the awareness of the community as to the inherent quality of the Museum's overall collections. It is anticipated that, by integrating significant exemplars from the Mayer's European Collection into an organized exhibition of drawing, painting and sculpture produced in and around Paris during 1860-1930 several advantageous results might be achieved. 1. By taking works of art out of one gallery or context, moving them into another gallery and installing them next to pieces with different ones.
