The Marquis de Santon-Complin. did not forget the information that Marie Chevreuse had given him respecting her lover, Ramasseur. Although the Marquis was not exactly a narrow-minded man, he nevertheless took a profound dislike to the soldier simply because he was the lover and accepted suitor of Marie. The girl had told him so, and she had admitted that she reciprocated his affection and loved him fondly in return. In fact, she preferred a common soldier to a nobleman and a gentleman. He argued that if he could contrive to remove Ramasseur, to degrade or disgrace him, to cause him to become a ruffian and a blackguard, he would disgust Marie, and that, getting over the love of her youth she would be more likely to allow her affections to rest upon her more exalted admirer. Riding into the spacious court-yard of the barracks, Colonel de Santon-Complin spoke to his brother officers as the men were mustered on parade. Dismounting from his horse, the colonel inspected the Bamasseur on Parade. 161 accoutrements of the men, and called the attention of the sergeant to any defects he was able to detect. Making a dead stop opposite Ramasseur, he eyed him all over and said, " Sergeant!" The sergeant saluted. "That man seems very dirty."
