The Marquis de Santon-Complin. did not forget the information that Marie Chevreuse had given him respecting her lover, Ramasseur. Although the Marquis was not exactly a narrow-minded man, he nevertheless took a profound dislike to the soldier simply because he was the lover and accepted suitor of Marie. The girl had told him so, and she had admitted that she reciprocated his affection and loved him fondly in return. In fact, she preferred a common soldier to a nobleman and a gentleman. He argued that if he could contrive to remove Ramasseur, to degrade or disgrace him, to cause him to become a ruffian and a blackguard, he would disgust Marie, and that, getting over the love of her youth she would be more likely to allow her affections to rest upon her more exalted admirer.
