Etienne Dumont's "Souvenir sur Mirabeau" was published in 1832, and though the book excited great attention at the time, and has been freely quoted by all writers on the French Revolution, more especially by Carlyle, it has never, as far as I know, been translated into English before. Carlyle has picked out many of the most interesting anecdotes and has reproduced them in his history and also in his essay on Mirabeau, but his attitude towards Dumont himself is far from sympathetic, and it is interesting to compare his idea of Dumont's character with that of Macaulay as shown in his article in the "Edinburgh Review" for July, 1832. Carlyle says, "Dumont is faithful, veridical; within his own limits he has even a certain amount of picturesqueness and light clearness.

Etienne Dumont's "Souvenir sur Mirabeau" was published in 1832, and though the book excited great attention at the time, and has been freely quoted by all writers on the French Revolution, more especially by Carlyle, it has never, as far as I know, been translated into English before. Carlyle has picked out many of the most interesting anecdotes and has reproduced them in his history and also in his essay on Mirabeau, but his attitude towards Dumont himself is far from sympathetic, and it is interesting to compare his idea of Dumont's character with that of Macaulay as shown in his article in the "Edinburgh Review" for July, 1832.
