Excerpt from On the Path of Adventure
I desire to state right here that this humble literary effort does not in any way claim to be an addition to the formidable array of books on the technical side of the war. It is, on the contrary, merely a narrative compiled from the notes in my diary of a period during the early days of the war when I was "out" to get all the material I would - without, as will be seen, concerning myself overmuch with the regulations laid down at that time by the authorities "for the observance of war -correspondents."
As my wanderings were entirely within the zone of operations, it is obvious that the incidents I have described were always more or less connected with the theatre of the war - but they were happenings rather behind the scenes than on the actual battle - front.
