Researches of this character will, as a rule, find less general acceptance than if they were directed towards strengthening the powers of execution.

The following translation was undertaken with the View of rendering more accessible a work that possesses great interest both for music and metaphysics. For music, because, independ ently of the theory involved, it contains a clear and compact account, written by a skilful musician and experienced teacher, of the doctrine of harmony and metre; in which the received rules are reduced under general principles, while upon particular points new and unexpected light is frequently cast. For meta physics, because it is an application of Hegel's method of philosophy to a concrete subject, that has, like logic, the peculiar advantage of standing by itself and of being comprised in a comparatively narrow compass.
