Reseña del editor:
Swiftly chronicling the life and death of one man’s vision for an education system producing forward-thinking specialists to rescue the environment and society from current states of degradation, The Didactron is a novel by Robert Giles, former natural resource and biology professor at Virginia Tech. The narrative follows the conception and launch of an innovative undergraduate teaching initiative by the same name and has strong ties to the author’s own experience in higher education and to his current commercial project, Rural System, Inc. (www.ruralsystem.com). Alighting upon multiple characters in the complex web of academia—students, professors, administrators, parents—The Didactron raises vital questions about the efficacy and value of higher education systems in the United States.
Biografía del autor:
Robert Giles envisions The Didactron serving in the “Power Places” group of Rural System, Inc., a for-profit enterprise concept on which he has actively worked for twenty years and full-time since his retirement from Virginia Tech. He saw the need while he taught courses there in wildlife management, systems ecology, Man and Environment (College of Architecture), Integrated Pest Management (College of Agriculture), and seminars for thirty years. He won teaching awards there as well as at the University of Idaho where he started computer-aided instruction in his wildlife classes. Computer use had become essential in his PhD studies on effects and movement of a radio-isotope-labeled insecticide applied to a watershed in Ohio. He now sees the need for educating staff and participants in the developing enterprise. Following work as a multi-county Virginia district wildlife biologist, he attended Ohio State University where his primitive computer work on his thesis became significantly upgraded. Finishing doctorate studies in Ohio he went west, where he had spent a summer on a fire lookout with the US Forest Service in Oregon. The diverse education he encountered, including that required to qualify as an Army Ranger after his Master’s degree, pressed on him needs to match excellence in teachers whom he met in Lynchburg, Virginia, to meet family traditions, realize commitment to natural resource management, and resolve the personal query about whether to work intensively and demonstrably well in one area or with many students over many areas. He chose the latter, taught and did studies for fifty years, consulted, worked In the mid-1970s with the Penn Virginia Resources Company, Duffield, Virginia, and C.B. Slemp to initiate the coal-field enhancing Powell River Project. Dr. Giles benefited from life with his loving wife—a PhD educator—for fifty-four years and their two daughters, the shared ideas and resources with graduate students who developed fifty-nine theses and twelve dissertations, and his students who escorted him within India, China, Nigeria, and Senegal. His Virginia cabin was birthplace of his essays “Peculiar Manor: Essays from a Virginia Mountain Cabin. He’s published three textbooks and two hundred papers, blogs online (Faunal Force and Rural System), and continues to seek capital to realize Rural System, Inc.
