Reseña del editor:
This volume contains two of Lichtenstein’s diaries written while working at Nankai University in Tianjin, Peoples Republic of China. He wrote the first diary during the Tiananmen Square uprising in May and June of 1989. This diary is an eyewitness account of the daily events taking place on campus and in the streets of Tianjin during this tumultuous time. He observed first-hand the mass demonstrations and marches of students, faculty and citizens in Tianjin and Beijing. He was in Tiananmen Square on June 4, the day of the violent military crackdown when Chinese soldiers cleared the square of protesters. Lichtenstein wrote the second diary while on a six-month sabbatical leave in the spring semester of 1990 when Chinese authorities clamped down on universities and implemented sweeping regressive policies to prevent further rebellions. This second diary too is Lichtenstein’s eyewitness account of how individual students and teachers endured the tightened campus security and of how the Communist Party, in an effort to preserve their authority and prestige, had created an atmosphere of fear and apprehension. The volume also contains a translation of a widely read large-character poster that had been pasted to a wall on the university campus in May of 1989. The poster clearly reflects the sentiments of the protesting students. Lichtenstein ends the volume with several photographs he had taken providing visual evidence of the ferment he witnessed in the streets of China.
