An alcoholic himself although sober now for thirty years, Kananen discovered that his years spent drunk were lost years. The idea behind this revamped story is to encourage people to live their lives in such a manner that they can remember what they have done. Marvin Kananen is a former teacher, a retired missionary who lived among the Maasai people of northern Tanzania for twelve years, and a biblical cruciverbalist (maker of Bible-based crossword puzzles). A Finn, born in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, a graduate of Suomi College (now Finlandia University), Pacific Lutheran University, and Oakland University, Kananen has fished commercially, served as a pastor, taught college English, wrote ten published books, lived a dozen years in a ten-by-ten square hut in the Cascade Mountains in Washington State, finally married at the age of forty-four, and currently lives in Bellevue, Washington with his wife and canoe.
