Dale Harbison Carnegie (1888–1955) was an American writer and lecturer, as well as the creator of the Dale Carnegie Courses in self-improvement, salesmanship, corporate training, public speaking, and interpersonal skills. Following a failed acting career, the native Missourian headed to New York and launched a public speaking class at the 125th Street YMCA, where he was staying. By 1915, he was a successful lecturer and had written his first book, The Art of Public Speaking. He would go on to publish several successful titles throughout his career, including How to Stop Worrying and Start Living and How to Win Friends and Influence People, which remains a bestseller to this day.
Joseph Berg Esenwein (1867–1946) was an American writer, lecturer, and editor. He began his career as president of Albright Collegiate Institute before becoming educational director at the Washington Heights YMCA in New York City in 1897. After a stint as an English professor at the Pennsylvania Military College at Chester, Esenwein traded his career in education for one in editing, helming several publications, including Booklovers’ Magazine, Lippincott’s Magazine, and the Writer’s Monthly.
