Abby the Last Astronaut is an enjoyable science fiction story for middle grade readers. When a water drought brings humanity close to extinction, a message from another planet, also offers an answer for survival. Earth sends Abby, a fearless fourteen year old student adventurer, into space to meet the other humans in hopes of finding out the solution to earth’s drought. Even though Abby is amazed at the new planet’s way of life, she will have to consider the possibility that they may have ulterior motives for helping earth. Read to find out what Abby decides. This science fiction story will entertain the imagination of young readers and is the first in the science fiction series.

Karen Jean Matsko Hood has always loved children and enjoyed reading. It was only natural that she would eventually have a passion for writing children's fiction books. Her writing presents a unique combination of different themes and poetic formats. Her books exhibit her voice of compassion and purpose. Hood is masterful at weaving a story to capture a child's imagination and hopes to inspire their interest in reading. Hood bases her books upon her family interests and her own life experiences, and she writes about topics that children will enjoy. Her first successful children's novel is Lost Medal, in which she incorporates her love of the stately Icelandic horses with her love for children. Hood also writes about personal and spiritual themes on a level that children can understand. She is working to complete two more children's novels, Anna Arrives from Yugoslavia and a children's fantasy novel titled Magi Terra. She has completed two soothing bedtime stories for children called Goodnight, I Wish You Goodnight, and Angels, Angels Way Up High, and is currently working to complete additional picture books that include Petting Farm Fun!, Cocoa the Rottweiler, and Grandma's Poppy Seeds. Karen Jean Matsko Hood began writing as a shy author, but has now developed a voice all her own. Her writing exhibits a unique story as well as a voice of empathy and purpose. Hood's writing is strong-minded. She is a meticulous wordsmith and combines stories with compassion. Hood has always loved children and her life is devoted to their needs. With this passion, she channels her efforts to include children's books and poetry. Hood writes both fiction and nonfiction children's books. Hood reminds us of the importance of our links with nature and environment in our daily lives. Her writing carries the urgency and outrage with areas of current social injustice and inequality. The recurring theme in Hood's work is to provide a voice for those whose struggles cannot be heard. Hood's writing brings poignancy to the most hopeless of situations. She is romantic in her vision for a quest for dignity and social justice. Hood also writes about personal and spiritual themes. She is passionate both as a feminist and as an active children's rights advocate. She works to encourage literacy for all ages. Her blend of traditionalism and modernism brings a current freshness and uniqueness to her own poetic voice. She is versatile in her writing style and is able to incorporate a wide range of themes and topics. Her poems have been published in a myriad of magazines and publications. Hood was born and raised in Great Falls, Montana. As an undergraduate, she attended the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, Minnesota, and St. John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota. She attended the University of Great Falls in Great Falls, Montana. Hood received a B.S. Degree in Natural Science from the College of St. Benedict and minored in both Psychology and Secondary Education. Upon her graduation, Hood and her husband taught science and math on the island of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Hood has completed postgraduate classes at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. In May 2001, she completed her Master's Degree in Pastoral Ministry at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. She has taken postgraduate classes at Lewis and Clark College on the North Idaho college campus in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Taylor University in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Spokane Falls Community College, Spokane Community College, Washington State University, University of Washington, and Eastern Washington University. Hood is working on research projects to complete her Ph.D. in Leadership Studies at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. Hood resides in Greenacres, Washington, along with her husband, many of her sixteen children, and foster children. Her interests include writing, research, and teaching. She previously has volunteered as a court advocate in the Spokane juvenile court system for abused and neglected children. Hood is a literary advocate for youth and adults. Her hobbies include cooking, baking, collecting, photography, indoor and outdoor gardening, farming, and the cultivation of unusual flowering plants and orchids. She enjoys raising several specialty breeds of animals including Babydoll Southdown, Friesen, and Icelandic sheep, Icelandic horses, bichons frisés, cockapoos, Icelandic sheepdogs, a Newfoundland, a Rottweiler, a variety of Nubian and fainting goats, and a few rescue cats. Hood also enjoys bird-watching and finds all aspects of nature precious. She demonstrates a passionate appreciation of the environment and a respect for all life.
