This turning point of the Pacific Sea War saw the Japanese send 88 ships to attack the small island of Midway, 1000 miles west of Hawaii. From 3-5 June 1942 fearsome air attacks by both parties failed to achieve an advantage until dive bombers from two US aircraft carriers finally accounted for three Japanese carriers, and then more.
