What are those chief outward occurrences and governmental acts which have contributed to bring our national affairs to their present state? 1. I name, first, the introduction of negro slavery to this continent. 2. The Compromises of the Constitution. 3. The occurrence of certain events which unexpectedly arrested the decay of slavery, and gave it new and unantici pated strength [cotton gin, productiveness of slave laborers]. 4. The admission of new slave states,--under the pressure of the new vitality and expansiveness of the slave-system, but contrary to the understanding of the Fathers. 5. The establishment, in 1820, of the Missouri Compromise. 6. The repeal of this Missouri Compromise, in 1854. 7. The plot, now fast approach ing completion, of forcing slavery upon Kansas, and the territory beyond. II. What are those interior principles and facts which have assisted to bring us into our present condition as a people? 1.An inordinate individual passion for wealth. 2. Our lax political morality.3. The remarkable craving for political office, which characterizes the American people. 4. The essential internal influence of slaveholding upon the master. 5. The immorality which slavery engenders. 6. The brutality of manner which slavery naturally induces. Is there any remedy for this? I. Remember that God has jurisdiction over nations and communities, and their sins; as well as over individuals. II. We must confess to him all our sins, which have respect to our relationship as citizens. III. We must forsake these sins. Binding is Pamphlet.
