Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. With illustrations, maps and appendix by A.W. Hill. London: Edward Arnold, 1902. 8vo. xi + [2], 236pp + 32pp (publisher's catalogue). Frontispiece. 59 b/w text illustrations. 2 folding maps; 2 in text. Original gilt scarlet cloth. Slight fading of backstrip. "File Copy" slip pasted onto front cover. Near fine. Detailed account of a journey across central Iceland in the summer of 1900 by a party of five men and a woman. The author and expedition leader, William Bisiker, was an English geographer associated with the Oxford School of Geography. The group included Arthur W. Hill, a noted botanist and later director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, the geologist Herbert H. Thomas, later a noted paleobiologist and archaeologist, Captain W. H. Cope a mariner -- the nautical advisor, Miss. J. A. Hastie, Mr. W. Glen (a cousin of Miss Hasties) was the group's jack of all trades. In addition to the overland journey, the book recounts a visit to the Faroe Islands, travels in western Iceland, and a journey by sea along the coast and into the fjords of the island. A chapter on the capital of Reykjavik deals with the political structure of Iceland, at the time a dependency of Denmark, but granted home rule in 1874, exercised through the ancient Icelandic parliament, the Althing.
