Bound in contemporary half calf over marbled boards, spine with raised bands ruled in gilt with contrasting red morocco title label. A VG+ clean copy of this scarce work. Ex Libris Wilfrid Blunt, with his signature to blank front endpaper. Blakesley was a clergyman, who, whilst at Cambridge University was a member of the Apostles Club. Cambridge, Blakesley, a close friend of Alfred Lord Tennyson, sought relief from the English winter of 1857-58 in Algeria on doctor's orders. His account of this sojourn is both easily read and highly informative. Wilfrid Jasper Walter Blunt was an art teacher and writer. Blunt was art master at Haileybury College from 1923-1937, Drawing Master at Eton from 1938-1959 and Curator of the Watts Gallery from 1959-1983. He wrote twenty-seven books, most of them non-fiction; besides biographies, travel writings and histories of botanical illustration, he was author of two memoirs, Married to a Single Life and Slow on the Feather, the latter about his years at Eton. His brother Anthony was an art historian and a spy.
