Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Second American Edition. SECOND AMERICAN EDITION. Hardcover. Bound in brown publisher's cloth with a blind debossed border stamped into the front and back cover. Gilt lettering on the spine. Black endpapers. Written primarily in English with Greek mixed throughout, per the introduction, "This edition is an attempt to present exactly the original words of the New Testament, so far as they can now be determined from surviving documents. Since the testimony delivered by the several documents or witnesses is full of complex variation, the original text cannot be elicited from it without the use of criticism, that is, of a process of distinguishing and setting aside those readings which have originated at some link in the chain of transmission. This Introduction is intended to be a succinct account (I) of reasons why criticism is still necessary for the text of the New Testament; (II) of what we hold to be the true grounds and methods of criticism generally; (III) of the leading facts in the documentary history of the New Testament which appear to us to supply the textual critic with secure guidance; adn (IV) of the manner in which we have ourselves endeavored to embody the results of criticism in the present text." Contents include: 1) "The Need of Criticism for the Text of the New Testament"; 2) "The Methods of Textual Criticism"; 3) "Application of the Principles of Criticism to the Text of the New Testament"; 4) "Nature and Details of this Edition". Contains appendix with notes on select readings, notes on Orthography, with orthographical alternative readings, and quotations from the Old Testament. [xxxi] 324 pp. Appendix begins pagination again at page 1-188 pp. CONDITION: This edition is in overall "very good" condition, showing wear and rubbing to the cover and spine -- particularly the edges, slightly bumped corners, and wear at the head and foot of the spine. Small crack in seam of black endpapers, yet has not affected the binding. Occasional areas within the gutter where it is starting, or bears a minor crease with some stitching exposed, yet the binding is sound and solid. Pagination is complete. Leaves have evenly toned and are mostly free from marginalia except for light bracket marks made in pencil occasionally throughout. Previous owner's name is written in pencil on the front flyleaf. Annotation in ink on the second flyleaf, "See fine chapter on Greek originals; Dr. Dabney's Theology Essay (Vol. 1). Very light foxing throughout, and is predominantly found on the front and back endpapers. A nice copy. Additional photos available upon request. Full refund if not satisfied.
