Since the title page gone missing we can't with 100 percent accuracy say that this book is this or that but from our search it is the " Lugduni Batavorum, ex officina Plantiniana, apud Franciscum Raphelengium." edition. Printed 1590 by Christophe Plantin and the Officina Plantiniana. This edition at hand completely correspondce with the one Christophe Plantin printed. For more information please contact us.

Zustand: Good. 1st thus. Later half calf over marbled boards, G. engraved tp+789+[29]pp, includes the following errors in pagination - pp161-162 omitted, pp472, 538 mis-numbered 272, 438 respectively with the signatures running A-3E8 ( the text is complete & continuous ), lacks the initial blanks, leather cracked at the rear hinge & upper hinge cracked at the gutter - both boards are attached but are fragile & require careful handling, occasional yellowing of the pages due to lesser quality paper stock being used, a good copy of an uncommon Elzevir. Early ownership signature at the base of the engraved title. Some copies have a printed title instead - it is supposed that the engraved title was not finished in time for the press on ealy copies. The works of the Roman historian & orator Publius Cornelius Tacitus [ 56 - 117 ] as edited by Justus Lipsius [ 1547- 1606 ]. Lipsius oversaw several editions through the press, improving his text each time. Rahir 150, Willems 178 - ( who called the quality of the printing of this book from the presses of Bonaventure Elzevir as 'médiocre' ). 325 grams.

Contemporary full mottled calf, smooth back divided into six panels , morocco author label to second panel, volume label to third, remaining panels with central flower device and smaller flower corner pieces, covers with triple fillet border, gilt roll to edges and inner edges, all edges gilt, french curl marbled endpapers. Author label to volume one faded, spines slightly faded, slightly rubbed to extremities, head of volume one chipped with small amount of loss. Internally bright and clean, previous owners' book label and shelf mark labels to front pastedown. Engraved frontispieces to each volume. Dibdin II:455, Moss II:645, Brunet V:636, 'bon texte' Size: 12mo.
Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. Bound in calf-skin vellum-- spine has 6 ridges with the words TACITUS Curante GRONOVIO (clearly done with quill and ink). It appears some text has worn away below this. The leather binding is an ivory color, more discolored along the spine, where it has begun to wear away at 2 of the ridges. Front and back are embossed with floral diamond design-- shows signs of shelfwear but nothing the sturdy vellum wouldn't handle. The binding is tight. Outer edges of pages very brown with age, dust and sun. Based on other book descriptions, I believe this is volume one of a two volume set. There's some foxing throughout the book, and yellowing around the edges of pages, as would be expected of a book this age. Paper is thicker than paper of later books, and you can see that each letter in the text was arranged by a typesetter. First pages (the introduction) begin with larger font that gradually reduces in size. 756 pages in all. The title page reads as follows: C. Cornelii Taciti OPERA QUAE EXSTANT Integris BEATI RHENANI, FULVII URSINI, M. ANTONII MURETI, JOSIAE MERCERI, JUSTI LIPSII, VALENTIS ACIDALII, CURTII PICHENAE, JANI GRUTERI, HUGONIS GROTII, JOANNIS FREINSHEMII, JOANNUS FREDERICI GRONOVII, & felecti aliorum Commentariis illustrata. Ex Recensione & Cum Notis JACOBI GRONOVII (engraving of a woman and boy with the words VIRTUTIS GLORIA MERCES) TRAJECTI BATAVORUM Apud { JACOBUM a POOLSUM, } Bibliop. et { JOHANNEM VISCH. } cIc. Ic. ccxxi On the left-hand facing page is a full-page engraving of art, sculpture, and writing figures with the publisher's name along the bottom.
