Buch
Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. Proof Copy. A unique set of three copies of this authoratative book which outlines the content and importance of Octavia Hill's Letters on Housing. Written by her niece, the author. One copy is what looks to be an early first edition in maroon-coloured stiff paper covers with black title lettering on the spine and front cover. Another copy is in the same colour covers but has no title lettering on the spine. It is signed by the author thus: "Miss Joan Sunderland with gratitude from Elinor S. Ouvry, September 1933." (the dedicatee being a housing manager in Lambeth and then being appointed to the position of Munitions Housing Manager in Barrow in 1917.) This copy has a five page hand-written foreword by Neville Chamberlain, signed and dated 1933. It is not known whether this is in Chamberlain's own hand or if it was dictated by him to the author or perhaps a secretary. The third copy is even more interesting as it is in grey stiff paper covers with a white label for the title lettering which is printed in black print. The words "Proof copies" is written in light pencil at the bottom edge of this label. On the title page handwritten in light pencil, under the author's name is: "Foreword by The Rt. Hon. Neville Chamberlain" which is presumably an instruction to include those words on the final draft. Again the foreword has been hand written and is slightly different from the previously mentioned foreword in the other copy. There are corrections and additions in the margins, written in light red pen in several places throughout. Furthermore there are letters laid in from the author to Miss Sunderland, regarding the publication of the book and a brief note about who and where it should be sent to and sold at. There is a further short letter to Joan Sunderland, dated Sept 10 1933, from and signed by Neville Chamberlain which basically is his agreement to write the foreword after the end of the month. The address at the head of the note is Dalchosnie, Kinloch, Rannoch, Perthshire. It is still in its original envelope addressed to 69 Warwick Square, London, SW1. In all this is a scarce and unique collection. More photos available on request.
