Gillespie supplies a preliminary text of his own, followed by a reprint of Count Rumford?s essay on fireplace construction taken from the first American printing of the Count?s collected Essays, but what gives his book a real individuality is that Gillespie was himself an architect and designer and that on almost every page there is a sketch illustration of a fireplace, fire grate or fire dog on what would otherwise be the page?s blank outer lower corner, additionally to illustrations on the main part of the page. 8vo. 198 + (2)pp, many text ills, (12)pp adverts. Publisher?s cloth, recased.

Additional information on title page: Containing Benjamin Count of Rumford's Essay on 'Proper Fireplace Construction (comprising pp. 45-109). 8vo. (21 cm.) [5]6-109p. Plus 12p. of illustrated advertisements for Rumford Fireplaces. Profusely illustrated with black and white photos and numerous drawings. Pasted and laid in at various places in the book are newspaper clippings about fireplaces and other heating devices--a virtual treasure trove of additional information on fireplaces. Brown cloth with gilt letters on the front cover and the spine and with a color pictorial pastedown on the front cover showing a man snoozing in front of (presumably a Rumford) fireplace. Some wear to extremities with a couple of corners just barely rubbed through, top and bottom of spine just barely beginning to fray, gilt bright, cover pastedown intact, slight faded area in bottom quarter of front cover, previous owner's name and address on front pastedown (Robert Denniston, Glengary, Idaho), else very good to near fine with no internal markings. No dust jacket. The Rumford fireplace is a tall, shallow fireplace designed by Sir Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford, an Anglo-American physicist best known for his investigations of heat. Its shallow, angled sides are designed to reflect heat into the room, and its streamlined throat minimizes turbulence, thereby carrying away smoke with little loss of heated room air. Rumford fireplaces were common from 1796, when Count Rumford first wrote about them, until about 1850. Jefferson had them built at Monticello, and Thoreau listed them among the modern conveniences that everyone took for granted. This is a "must have" volume for anyone interested in fireplaces or historic types of home heating. A rare find!.
