Endpapers are photos of the sun-parlor where the turtles spent time in a small pond. Illustrations are b x w photos and cover art is by Charles Dana Gibson, the author's brother. The textblock shows some toning to a few pages, the frontis. is a color photo of turtle "Virginia". Unsigned volume, listed as #243 of a 300 vol. Limited Edition set. The dust jacket shows minor grime, chip and edge rips as repaired.

Twenty-three full-page plates, including an extra plate facing Page 58, complete (except for a listed illustration on dust jacket, not included). All plates are in black-and-white except for the color frontispiece which shows one of the author's tortoises, Virginia. List of plates in the front. Front colophon on title page: "First Edition; This is a limited edition of three hundred copies. This is Number 231." Covers are very clean and intact except for moderate wear at edges and corners (mostly at corners and head and tail of spine) and slight loosening to spine. Binding is still strong and holding. Pages are clean and intact overall except for light age toning, remnants o what appears to be a paper pocket that was tipped in on verso of back free endpaper, and a missing portion of back free endpaper measuring 1 1/2" x 3 1/4." A Good copy. An endearing autobiographical account by Josephine Gibson Knowlton of her pet turtles or tortoises. Replete with first-hand observations that shed much light on the appearances, behavior, and personalities of tortoises. Knowlton documents her first tortoises, hand-rearing baby tortoises, different species of tortoises she has kept as pets, and a few of her beloved pet tortoises including Virginia, Donald, and Bronzy. The author's signed inscriptions reads, "This book is a gift to the Washington Club in appreciation of the delightful review given by Florence Lewis Speare April [---?] 19th 1952--I trust it will find many friends for My Turtles among its members. Dark green cloth boards, lettering and decoration in gilt, with front cover design of a four-quarter coat of arms representing Gibson D'Wolf and Hastings Marston; endpapers with a picturesque harbor view of the town of Bristol from a watercolor by Louisa M. (Gibson) Pratt. Dust jacket is illustrated with a photograph of the house on the front panel and has printed flaps but is otherwise plain white (unprinted). Very good to near fine with cover showing only the barest wear to the spine ends, back lower corner slightly bumped, previous owner's name at head of endpaper and bookplate on fly-leaf. Interior pages are clear and bright. Dust jacket good-only due to pieces missing along the top edge of the front and spine but otherwise relatively bright and clean.
