Lehman biographical document, on thicker stock paper, which also provides information regarding three of his books, including Lincoln at Peoria. (see photographs). "To understand President Abraham Lincoln, one must understand the extraordinary anti-slavery speech Lincoln delivered at Peoria on October 16, 1854. This three-hour address marked the turning point in Lincoln's political pilgrimage, dramatically altering his political career and, as a result, the history of America. in Lincoln at Peoria author Lewis E. Lehrman examines the seminal speech and its historical context. Lehrman argues that the great divide between the statecraft of Lincoln's presidential years and his early legislative years originates with the speech at Peoria in 1854. Admitted to the Illinois bar in 1836, having served four terms in the state legislature and a single term in Congress (1847 - 1849), Abraham Lincoln had substantially withdrawn from politics between 1849 and 1854. During these five years, Lincoln developed his Springfield law practice and became a well-respected litigator on the 8th judicial circuit of Illinois. Then in May 1854 Congress passed one of the most explosive statutes of American history, the Kansas-Nebraska Act. Sponsored by Illinois Senator Stephen A. Douglas, this legislation repealed the prohibition on slavery in that section of the Louisiana Territory north of the 36 30 parallel - a restriction on the spread of slavery agreed by North and South in the Missouri Compromise of 1820. Lincoln opposed any further extension of slavery in the American republic, holding to the Declaration of Independence's universal principle that "all men are created equal." In response to the Kansas-Nebraska Act, Lincoln launched his anti-slavery campaign, delivering speeches in Springfield and Peoria. The Peoria address was rigorous, logical, and grounded in historical research. It marked Lincoln's reentry into politics and his preparation for the presidency in 1861. The speech catapulted Lincoln into the national debates over slavery and into national politics for the rest of his life." - from the inner front jacket flap. "Abraham Lincoln's speech at Peoria, Illinois, in October 1854 climaxed his return to the political stage, in response to Stephen A. Douglas's Kansas-Nebraska Act passed that year. Lewis Lehrrman's detailed study of the context, rhetoric, and consequences of this speech offers new insights on Lincoln's rise to greatness. [The book] takes its place among the important Lincoln books." - James M. McPherson, PUlitzer Prize-winning author. "A master of the vast historiography of the subject, Lewis E. Lehrman has authored an indispensable analysis of Abraham Lincoln's approach to the central issue of slavery." - David Brion Davis, Pultizer Prize winner and author. "Lewis E. Lehrman's eloquent, thorough study of Lincoln's first oratorical masterpiece makes a major new contribution to Lincoln studies." - Michael Burlingame, author. "This book is a remarkable and eloquent treatment of Lincoln, the private citizen, during the 1850s." Samuel G. Freedman, Professor, Columbia University.
