Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Good +. No Jacket. First Edition. 577 pages, frontispiece, maps, index, top edge gilt, slight exterior wear. Civil War, Indian Wars, Ghost Dance, Modoc War, etc. Covers lightly spotted, corners rubbed. Except for occasional penciled comments (which are actually quite interesting), internally a good copy. Unfortunately, the picture between page 16 and 17 has pulled out. It is laid in but when closed extends slightly beyond the edge of the book. the Lower right corner page xi-xii and a small piece from the following page along the edge missing, probably the result of careless opening; text not affected. See Nevins. Vol. I, pg. 156. Nevins did not especially like this work but it is a scarce biography of an officer who participated in the Civil War and many of the Indian wars that defined the last have of the 19th century. A nice copy overall. Schofield (1831-1906), born in NY, attended West Point. During the Civil War he won the Medal of Honor while serving in Missouri. Schofield later commanded the Army of the Cumberland and the Army of the Ohio. He served as military governor of Virginia and briefly Secretary of War. He scouted the Hawaiian Islands for an Army base, which later became Pearl Harbor. He also served as superintendent of West Point. A HEAVY BOOK ADDITIONAL POSTAGE MAY BE REQUIRED.
