Precious gothic edition combining in second edition "La Nef des Princes" by Champier with "La Nef des Batailles" by Barsac. Brunet, I, 1770; Brunschwig, 219-220. A highly reputed physician from Lyon, Symphorien Champier (1472-1533) embodied the multiple personalities and avid knowledge of the Pre-Renaissance period. Following the duke of Lorraine who accompanied Louis XII to Italy in 1509, he was at the battle of Marignan on 13 september 1515 and won the title of "Golden Knight". A poet, theologian, philosopher and doctor, he published several works in both Latin and French. "La Nef des Princes" or theory of governement intended for the prince, mixing prose with verse, is peppered with moralities, erudition and "many joys". The work is composed of several treatises: "The Government and regime of the young Prince. The proverbs of Princes. The doctrinal of Princes. The dialogue of nobility. The declaration of heaven, the world and the wonders of the earth. The doctrinal of the father of the family". One pamphlet is devoted to the "bigamist Matheolus", under the title "la malice des femmes". Printed in Gothic the edition is illustrated with 6 interesting woodcut figures: representation of the Last Supper, three schematic plans (105 mm) of the geographical situation and finally a very curious woodcut (90 x 85 mm) depicting a learned man in his library in his library, reading a book on a lectern, a naked woman on his shoulders holding geometric instruments. This woodcut is repeated on the special title of La Nef des batailles. "Woodcut representing the Last Supper, and another showing a figure busy reading, with a naked woman holding geometric instruments on his shoulders". (Brun, Le Livre Français illustré de la Renaissance, 152). The general title printed in red and black bears the mark of Philippe Le Noir, repeated on the verso of the last leaf (Renouard 624). A fine copy of these charming and rare illustrated Gothic editions, elegantly bound by Koehler with the cipher of A. Audenet (1839, n°40).

LVI, CXII ll.First and only edition of a work on the history of medicine by the French doctor Symphorien Champier (1472-1539). During his career Champier switched several times from being appreciative to critical towards Arab authors. In one of his earlier works, he describes Avicenna (Ibn Sina) as "a man of most outstanding genius and certainly the most distinguished of all" (Siraisi). On the other hand, he later criticised Italian doctors, "who allowed their schools to be occupied by 'Arabs, Persians, Indians and Mahometans'" (Siraisi). In the present work, which he wrote late in his career, he takes a more moderate view, admitting that Arabs indeed made useful contributions to the study of medicine, and calling Avicenna the noblest of them all. The text can be seen as a brief history of medicine, dividing it in three sections: Greek, Latin and Arabic medicine. For the Latin he makes a distinction between Latini, those who follow Galen and Hipprocrates (Boqrat), and barbari, those who set out their own path. With some manuscript annotations in the margins. The two parts bond in reverse order. Very slightly browned and some occasional minor spots. Binding has the corners bumped and the spine soiled. Overall a very good copy.l Durling 930; Parkinson 505; cf. N.G. Siraisi, Avicenna in renaissance Italy: the canon and medical teaching in Italian universities after 1500 (1987), pp. 71-73.

This edition, printed at "L'isle galique dicte Lyonnoise" was published the same year as a Parisian one. Allut, Champier's bibliographer, states (p. 235) that "all early editions are unobtainable", he never saw that of Paris 1529, and knew only three or four copies of those of Lyon 1529, 1579 and 1648 . Bound with, by the same author : - Cy comence ung petit livre du royaume des Allobroges dit long temps apres Bourgogne ou Vienois. (20) ff. "Booklet of an excessive rarity" says Allut. "These two little books belong to the same volume, and any copy without these two books must be regarded as imperfect." The greed of some booksellers took advantage of the fact that these pieces are paginated and have their own signature, to sell them separately at huge prices." According to an old pencil note on a front fly-leaf: "Copy of Coulon's sale (1845) item 743 fetched 285 F., an enormous price, almost three times the price of the Nuremberg Chronicle in the same sale. " Bound with, probably by the same author : - Les nouvelles venues à Lyon de la réception de nos seigneurs les Dauphins & duc d'Orléans en France. (4) ff. Written on the occasion of the rescue of the children of France, held hostage in Madrid. This very rare work has been printed with the same characters as the preceding works. Allut considers "probable" that Champier is the author. The first line of the last sheet of this booklet has been cropped by the bookbinder. The Lyonnais physician Symphorien Champier (1471-1538) enjoyed considerable fame during his lifetime. "An extraordinary man, at once a poet, a soldier, a magistrate, a physician to the Duke of Lorraine, a theologian, a historian, a botanist, a veritable image of the Renaissance, which produced so complete and diverse geniuses. [Full collation available.] Bound in XVIIc stab-bound vellum over boards. Titles and authors ink manuscript to spine. Some darkening to the spine. Marginal damp-stain to the margins of the first two works. A little tanning, and very occasional mild foxing. Ownership signatures of Louis and Scévole de Sainte-Marthe (known as the frères Sainte-Marthe) -- "De Sainte Marthe" flanking the printer's device, "Ex Bibliotheca Fratrum Sammarthanorum" at the lower edge -- of the title-page of nos. 1 and 4 (and doubtless excised from no. 2). Engraved armorial bookplate of Sainte-Marthe to the front paste-down. The sack of Rome, initiated on 6 May 1527, was one of the most consequential events in modern European history. The army of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor (a Catholic), had a great many Lutheran soldiers. Charles had run short of funds, and the unpaid soldiers mutinied and formed a detachment under the Duke of Bourbon, forcing him to lead them to the walls of Rome and to pursue the heart of the Catholic Church. For a month they ransacked and pillaged the city till at last Pope Clement VII -- born Giulio de' Medici -- surrendered, succumbing to a great many of the demands of Charles, who disavowed any role in the sack. The consolidation of power in a single figure, ruling over more of Europe than any man since the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476, signalled a new phase in the European Renaissance. Gathering together four works written over 100 years (the earliest just ten years after the sack), the volume explains the "triplex imperium" -- the tripartite Holy Roman Empire, comprising the Roman, French (Frankish) and German territories -- that was flourishing in the XVIc and XVIIc. Symphorien Champier (1471-1539) is best known as a medical writer, but in his later years he wrote nationalist accounts of the role of France vis à vis the Holy Roman Empire. Joachim Périon (1499-1559) was a French humanist who "de-medievalized" classical texts, and was one of the pivotal philologists of the Renaissance. Published the year after his death, this study of the magistracies of Greece and Rome was edited by his nephew François, having been found among his papers. The treatise was dedicated to Odet de Coligny, known as the Cardinal de Châtillon, but the epistle dedicatory is addressed to Scévole de Sainte-Marthe. This is the father (1536-1623) of the owners of the Sammelband: a distinguished poet, humanist and financier to Henry III and IV. Was this the copy of the dedicatee, inherited by his sons? César Grolier (ca. 1510-ca. 1595) was the son of the incomparable bibliophile Jean Grolier, and went to make his name in the Roman Curia. Only 17, César witnessed first-hand the destruction of Rome, and, his father's son, lamented the damage done to the Vatican library in particular. The work --published here for the first time, 110 years after its authorship -- is in the form of a letter to his father. It is intensely vivid and personal, although its Latinity is perhaps indicative of his tender age. Louis (1571-1656) and Scévole (II, 1571-1650) were twin brothers. Humanists, poets, historians, they were named jointly as historians to the king. From 1626 to their deaths they worked on the massive Gallia Christiana, cataloguing the dioceses, abbeys and personnel of the church in France from the introduction of Christianity; the volumes began to appear in 1715, and the project was not completed until well into the XIXc. The works collected (doubtless by the Sammarthani, as the ink ownership inscription to item 4 has offset onto the final leaf of item 3) must have been of great use in the preparation of this massive work. Brunet, I.1769 (Champier), II.1761 (Grolier).
