Hardback bound bound in standard cloth covered boards of the period, rear outer rear hinge is split, front is nearly split leaving spine covering flapping which we have taped (magic-tape) for security- NEEDS ATTENTION. Chipping to top spine-end, some wear with small frays to bottom spine-end. Corners are worn with small frays bent over at top and bumped to bottom. Fairly light wear to edges, light impressed designs to boards and spine. Cloth showing a little to inner front hinge making board wobble but holding well, rear inner hinge is intact and sound, binding is spound. 2 pages advertising material bound into end-papers which are pale yellow of the period. Page-edges are darkened with age. Mottling/foxing to title-pages and frontispiece. Book has 2 title-pages, the first with an illustration of Kilcotman Castle is dated earlier at 1845. Pages have litle foxing/dust to the tops of some pages, but is generally clean - it also has a wave to pages throughout text. With repairs to spine cloth and tidying to corners a nice copy.

Also includes extensive notes and critical essays by Addison and Dr. Johnson. Symmons' "excellent" collection of the prose works includes a biographical notice of Milton as well as critical remarks (Lowndes, 1300). The final volume, a second edition of Todd's "Account", offers "an incomparable index of words, applicable to any edition" (Lowndes, 1300).
