Soft cover. Zustand: New. 2nd Edition. BRAND NEW COPY. Anthology of verse of Zhou Enlai (1898 - 1976), lesding member of the nascent Chinese Communist Party and the first Premier of the People's Republic of China until his death. 11 Selected poems, written as a young man, range in time from 1914 to 1922, that is from 16 years old to 24; an Appendix gives the original Chinese text. Non-political in thought, the first four are written in traditional style; ones from 1919 on are in free verse. The last and lengthy, "Parting in Life, Separation by Death" on martyrdom reveal philosophical thoughts on life and death . on humans being separated in life and eternally apart in death. The concluding lines may better be rendered, "Know Life and Death/Struggling to live/Fighting to die/What of eternal separation?".

[Beijing 1966]. Two large black & white glossy photographs, sheet: 25.5 x 31; print size 22.6 x 29.2 cm., very clean and bright, 4 tiny pin mended holes in corners, verso blank, an excellent original period example. * * RARE SELDOM FOUND * * . *** **** *** . . ZHOU EN-LAI & CHEN BODA GREET HONG WEI BING [RED GUARDS] . . . AT THE TIANANMEN SQUARE, BEIJING MASS RALLY . . . MOST LIKELY ON AUGUST 8, 1966 . * Two superb 1966 period large glossy original photographs showing ZHOU Enlai & CHEN Boda, at the August 1966 mass Tiananmen Square, Beijing rally. . Note both wear the "Hong Wei Bing" ["Red Guard"] arm bands, signifying their full support & endorsement of the WEN HUA DA GEMING [Cultural Revolution] from the beginning. . In these photos, Zhou greets Chen, they shake hands and smile. In the second photo, Zhou addresses the mass rally and demonstrators. Zhou holds prepared remarks. . Both wear army uniforms and "Mao" hats. . *** ZHOU, Enlai [1898-1976]: He was the co-founder of the Chinese Communist Party, rose to become the Chinese Premier from 1949-1976. . The often pragmatic and moderate Zhou was attacked by radicals during China's "Cultural Revolution" after 1966, but he kept his position and influence, which was demonstrated in 1971 and 1972 when he was a central figure in the Chinese-U.S. rapprochement. . *** CHEN Boda: [1904-1989]: . He was a Chinese Communist journalist, professor and political theorist who rose to power as the chief interpreter of Maoism (or "Mao Zedong Thought") in the first 20 years of the People's Republic of China.[2] Chen became a close associate of Mao Zedong in Yan'an, during the late 1930s, drafting speeches and theoretical essays and directing propaganda. . At the start of the Cultural Revolution in 1966, Mao named him Chairman of the Cultural Revolution Group, entrusting him with the task of guiding the new mass movement. However, his ultra-radical line and close ties with Lin Biao eventually led to his downfall in 1970. . Cultural Revolution: WEN HUA DA GEMING [THE CULTURAL REVOLUTION]: During the Cultural Revolution in Beijing, 1966 until 1969, Chen Boda was to play an important role in the Cultural Revolution. In May 1966, he was placed at the head of the newly formed Cultural Revolution Group (CRG), a body established to oversee and direct the course of the Cultural Revolution. . In time, this group would rise to become the most important political body in China, surpassing even the influence of the Politburo. Furthermore, Chen Boda was also placed as head of the Communist government's propaganda apparatus alongside Jiang Qing when the previous leader, Lu Dingyi (with whom he had often quarreled),[3] was deposed in 1966.[9] He also became a member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo. . According to the Central Committee leadership, the Cultural Revolution Group began to show signs of ultra-leftism during the late 1960s. Boda's reputation began to wane after the 9th Party Congress in 1969 due to his ties with Lin Biao (with whom he had closely collaborated in the publication of the Little Red Book) and his opposition to Zhou Enlai's attempt to deescalate the Cultural Revolution and refocus on consolidating the Party. . This marked the end of Chen Boda's involvement in the Cultural Revolution. As the leadership became more moderate in its outlook and the initial aims of the cultural revolution were sidelined, Chen's radicalism caused concern, and he was denounced at the 10th Party Congress in 1973 as a 'revisionist secret agent' for his associations with Lin Biao. . After the Cultural Revolution, Chen was tried by the post-Mao government for collaboration with the Gang of Four. He was sentenced to eighteen years in prison, but was released under parole shortly afterwards due to his ill health, and his parole time ended in 1988. He died on 20 September 1989, at the age of 85. . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *** CONDITION: These are original 1966 period photographs, in excellent condition. There are 4 tiny mended pin holes in the corners of each, clearly these were posted & used to decorate some Red Guard or administration office. Each has a number [3 or 4] in the negative corners. . The verso is blank, no marks. There is a slight curl to each . *** RARE EXAMPLES: Such large, original period examples are RARE and obscure, seldom found. . *.

Ten vintage press photos, documenting the meetings of Chinese (among them Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai) and Hungarian Communist leaders in China, in 1957 and 1959 Nine pictures are showing important moments of János Kádár's 1957 visit to China. This tour was the second visit of the newly elected first secretary of the Hungarian Communist Party to any foreign countries (the first was to the USSR), after the repression of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 October. Kádár's first diplomatic meetings were crucial for the new Hungarian Communist leadership to show and consolidate the Party's legitimacy and power within and outside the country. The images depicting the meetings between the Hungarian delegates and their Chinese hosts, among them Mao and Zhou. The majority of the pictures show Zhou with Kádár attending official events like diplomatic meetings or a military parade. The photograph from 1959 shows Chairman Mao Zedong shaking hands with the Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Münnich in Beijing. Münnich led the Hungarian delegates at the notable occasion of signing the Chinese-Hungarian Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation on 6 May 1959. Hungary supported China's domestic and international aspirations, and the two countries already signed several less significant agreements in the spirit of mutual recognition throughout a decade, since the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949. This meeting was the last visit of a Hungarian Prime Minister to China in the 20th century. . The collection of 9 photos from 1957 are uncredited and unlabelled; they are in fine condition. The picture from 1959 is uncredited and labeled on the verso in Hungarian (Mao elnök találkozik Münnich miniszterelnökkel / Chairman Mao meets Prime Minister Münnich); this photo bears some traces of creases, otherwise in fine condition. 10 original, vintage, black and white press photograph.

Elegant hardcover photo album, covered with red Chinese brocade, containing 29 black and white photographs in different sizes (portraits: ca. 120 × 167 mm; other images: 100-110 × 65-95 mm; and a small ID picture). 22 album card leaves; 29 b/w photographs. A unique collection of photographs including portraits of Mao Zedong, Zhu De, Zhou Enlai, and other party leaders; a documentation of the visit of the Hungarian folk dance ensemble in China in 1952. The album starts with two large portraits of Mao Zedong and Zhou De; Mao appears in six additional pictures together with other party leaders such as Zhou De, Zhou Enlai, Zhang Wentian, Liu Shaoqi, Lin Boqi, and others, most likely during the May Day parade of 1952 at the Tiananmen Square. The further images are showing the Folk Dance Ensemble during performances or the moments offering gifts to Mao, and their visits to tourist attractions in Beijing. The Hungarian National Ballet and Folk Ensemble was a state dance group founded in 1950. The Ensemble's first major tour outside Europe was in China in the spring of 1952, where they held 40 performances within less than two months. The pictures of the present photo album showing the highlights of this journey. Due to its features and the content, we surmise that the album was a gift of one of the Chinese hosts to a Hungarian member of the dance group. . Artistically restored. 4to. 2 pp. on 2 ff. In English. To the U.S. diplomat J. Franklin Ray, director of the Far East Office of the UN Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA), acknowledging the dangers encountered by convoys delivering aid, and suggesting the establishment of liaison offices in both Communist and Nationalist areas: "I am very appreciative of your thoughtfulness in sending me the attached report made by the UNRRA inspector which gives me more understanding towards the difficulties encountered by the UNRRA and CNRRA transportation convoy in passing through the combat regions. It is comprehensible that the relief work in combat regions is hazardous; therefore it is inadvisable to ask the UNRRA or CNRRA personnel to carry it on at the risk of their lives. We suggest hereby to you that under the present circumstances separate liaison offices should be established in Nationalist and Communist areas respectively so as to facilitate the relief work. With the institution of these liaison offices, the relief personnel can carry out their work in cooperation with the local governments and military authorities, without being endangered by travelling between the areas and running through blockade lines and combat regions. Dr. T. F. Tsiang has already associated himself with my suggestion [.]". - With pencil annotations by Ray concerning further action: "We agree & are working actively on this as rapidly as necessary personnel can be mobilized [.]". - One of the principal leaders of the Chinese Communist Party, Zhou Enlai had played a key role fomenting unrest in Shanghai in the 1920s and was one of Mao's most trusted lieutenants by the time of the Long March. He was involved in intelligence and diplomatic work during the war with Japan. Premier of the PRC from its foundation until his death in 1976, he was additionally Foreign Minister from 1949 to 1958. - The letter was written when Zhou was representing the CCP at the Marshall Mission which, under American leadership, attempted to bring about a united government in China following the defeat of the Japanese. The Communists and Nationalists had signed a ceasefire in January 1946 but there was deep distrust between the two sides. By the summer of 1946 there were frequent clashes between Communists and Nationalists, especially in Manchuria, and negotiations were on the verge of collapse. This letter shows Zhou working to ensure the safety of aid convoys on behalf of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) and also the Nationalist Chinese National Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (CNRRA). - J(efferson) Franklin Ray (1905-91) served in several United Nations and State Department positions. He was director of UNRRA's Far East Office from 1945 to 1947; he was also a member of the 1948 and 1949 delegation to the Far Eastern Commission. Most of his posthumous papers are kept at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. - Traces of rust and pin holes to the upper left corner. Upper edge clipped without loss. Provenance: Stargardt, sale of 12 June 1986, lot 1223. Extremely rare.
