For centuries the japanese court has patronized the poetic art and participated in the composition of the traditional native verse form known as the walea. The great Imperial poetry anthologies of earlier centuries have defined the standards of excellence in japanese poetry and featured the contributions of the most gifted Japanese poets. Among them were many Emperors and Empresses, as well as other members of the Imperial family. Emperor Akihito and Empress Miehiko inherit this remarkable legacy and have preserved it with personal enthusiasm and literary mastery. Tomoshibi, which may be translated as "Light," is a collection of their verse, published in Japanese in 1986 and appearing here for the first time in English. As Crown Prince and Princess before their enthronement in 1990, the Emperor and Empress traveled extensively as ambassadors of good will for the Japanese people. Many of the Emperor's 166 poems and the Empress's 140 poems collected here were composed during their travels, and foreign climes and scenes are reflected in a fascinating manner. Other poems were composed for the annual New Year's Poetry Reading, and still others were composed to mark special events in the Japanese calendar or to record recollections of remarkable people. Painstakingly translated and annotated, the poems in Tomoshibi are indeed illuminating, revealing not only the depth and resonance of the Japanese poetic tradition but also of the characters and sensibilities of the Emperor and Empress with the immediacy that is poetry's special gift. "It is our hope," writes one of the editors of the collection, "that this Enghsh translation may lead to a better understanding of the Emperor and Empress, as also of Japan and its people. For it is their cultural traditions that, reflected in the literary activities of the Imperial family, reveal Japan as a land where beauty of spirit is expressed in song.".

Erstausgabe
First edition hard back binding in publisher's original grey cloth covers, gilt title and author lettering to the spine. 8vo. 9'' x 5½''. Contains [xxviii] 272 printed pages of text. This is a most important new work on Emperor Hirohito by one of Japan's leading historians, Ikuhiko Hata. Following the untimely death of Marius B. Jansen (Emeritus Professor, University of Princeton) in December 2000, who had been actively collaborating with the author and translator of the original Japanese edition ("Hirohito Tenno itsutsu no ketsudan", first published in 1987 and republished in 1994), it was inevitable that there would be a delay in publication of the English edition, which is finally now available. In his extended Foreword as editor, referring to the nature of Hirohito's power, Jansen states: 'We are left with puzzles that will probably never be resolved. Clearly, as Professor Hata and others have shown, the Emperor Hirohito had immense power, but the condition of retaining it was judicious restraint in exercising it'. In offering a view on the merits of Hata's research, Jansen points to the hitherto unknown plots (in parallel but unrelated) by both the Army and Navy to preserve, and if necessary resuscitate, the imperial line in the event the victors decided to depose Hirohito. Jansen also points to the merits of Hata's particular focus on the contribution Hirohito made to Japan in its post-war relations with the United States. Jansen added substantive notes to help place the author's material in historical and historiographical perspective. The book, which is not a biography or a general history of the Showa era, focuses on five decisions taken by Emperor Hirohito, which the author considers the key turning points of his reign: these concern the 26 February 1936 insurrection of young army officers, the termination of the Pacific War, the post-war constitution, the issue of abdication and the San Francisco Peace Treaty. Fine condition book in Fine condition dust wrapper, unused and unopened new book. We carry this book in stock for immediate dispatch. Member of the P.B.F.A. ISBN 9781905246359 JAPAN (History & Culture).
