Verlag: SCM Book Club [1977], Naperville, IL:, 1977

Softcover. viii, 85 p.; 19.5 cm. (SCM book club ; 232) [Studies printed in Advance; reset from 1963 edition: Methodist union catalog B1667] `In general I have avoided the more difficult and obscure passages, and concentrated on those where I felt reasonably confident that I could convey something of Paul's meaning to a reader with no technical equipment' (p. vii) -- `There are few Christian doctrines so puzzling as the dotrine of the Holy Spirit, and the best clue to it is given in the next few verses. To receive the Spirit does not mean (as a religion of legalism does mean) bondage and fear; the Spirit is the Spirit of adoption, who makes us God's children, and makes us know that we are God's children. It is the Spirit that makes us cry out to God, Abba, Father (8.15). It is worthwhile to linger over this word Abba. It is not Greek, but Aramaic, the language Jesus normally used. In that language it was not used for formal, liturgical purposes; it was the word a boy would use at home when he addressed his father in the familiar friendly way. But Jesus used it when he spoke to God (Mark 14.36), and Christians use it after him. Our adoption is not a matter of the liturgical service-book, but of the intimate life of God's family. This, however, is where we must pause for a moment. Look on to verse 23, and you will see that our adoption is something that has not yet happened. We are waiting for it. But in verse 15 it has so surely happened that already we are calling God Abba. It is through the Holy Spirit that both these statements can be true. God has not yet brought his story to its close.' (p. 43) Good orig. purple wrapper. Upper spine creased, top edge stained.

Pamphlet. 15 p.; 18 cm. (Foundery pamphlets ; no. 14) (Methodist union catalog B1637) `What I am talking about is the attitude that looks on the Bible as a burden, a yoke of bondage that man must shake off if he is to be free; almost a nuisance, that prevents man from being, doing, and believing as he pleases . There could be no bigger mistake. This is not the way to defend the Bible--better say with Spurgeon: `You should defend the Bible as you would a lion--let it loose'. The Bible is not a yoke of bondage, but the charter of liberty; and this it has proved itself again and again to be.' (p. 11) VG, stapled, in orig. green on yellow wrapper.

Pamphlet. 18 p.; 18 cm. (Foundery pamphlets ; no. 7) (Methodist union catalog B1635) `Preaching is one form of the self-communication of the Word of God. Such a self-communication is necessarily under the control not of men but of the `self' who makes it. .it is in God's hands, not ours, and of course he is quite capable of using, when He pleases, thoroughly bad exposition and exegesis as well as good--yea, expositon which is not exposition can God choose and use, when He sees fit. But it is nevertheless true that the form of preaching is exposition, just as the forms of the Gospel sacraments are water, and bread and wine. You can no more have a sermon without exposition than baptism without water, or the Lord's Supper without bread and wine. The preacher is not in the pulpit to express himself, to impose himself upon the congregation, but to expose and express the divine truth in Scripture, with as little human interposition as possible.' (p. 4 f.) VG, stapled, in orig. green on yellow wrapper.
