Errata slip. Signed and dated by the author on fep. DH has wear and tears. Corners bumped. Herbert Whittaker, drama critic emeritus of The Globe and Mail, has spent over fifty years in the service of Canadian theatre. Beginning as a stage designer and director in Montreal, in 1949 he became drama, film, and dance critic for The Globe and Mail in Toronto. From his position in the audience and backstage, he watched, praised, cajoled, and championed Canadian theatre during its impressive flowering. Distinguished critic and designer, born in Montreal, Quebec in 1910, died September 9, 2006. He studied at the École des beaux arts before becoming a stage designer. In Montreal, he designed productions of Shakespeare and Everyman for the Everyman Players. In Toronto he designed sets and costumes for the Canadian Players; for Hart House Theatre; Crest Theatre; and Coach House Theatre. He continued to design until 1999, at the age of 89. His set and costume designs are notable for their art deco aesthetic, stylization, symmetry, and colour. He also directed theatrical productions, particularly for the Montreal Repertory Theatre and Crest Theatre. He began his career in criticism as radio editor and then was film, dance and theatre critic for The Montreal Gazette (1935-49). He was invited to take the same post at the Globe and Mail (1949-75). By 1952 he was concentrating his critical attention more on theatre until his retirement in 1975. However, after retirement and as critic emeritus, he continued to cover theatre for the Globe and Mail. One of the top international ballet companies, The National Ballet of Canada was founded in 1951 by Celia Franca. A company of 70 dancers with its own orchestra, the National Ballet has been led by Artistic Director Karen Kain, one of the greatest ballerinas of her generation, since 2005. Renowned for its diverse repertoire, the company performs traditional full-length classics, embraces contemporary work and encourages the creation of new ballets as well as the development of Canadian choreographers. The company's repertoire includes works by Frederick Ashton, George Balanchine, John Cranko, Rudolf Nureyev, John Neumeier, William Forsythe, James Kudelka, Wayne McGregor, Alexei Ratmansky, Crystal Pite, Christopher Wheeldon, Aszure Barton, Guillaume Côté and Robert Binet. Canada's premier dance company performs annual Fall, Winter and Summer seasons plus The Nutcracker. The National Ballet has toured in Canada, the US and internationally with appearances in London, Paris, Hamburg, Moscow, St. Petersburg, New York City, Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles. The National Ballet is committed to outreach and education for families and youth who may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience the joys of ballet. The company has a wide range of age appropriate programmes designed to engage with schools and children in the Greater Toronto Area and communities across Canada. YOU dance, the National Ballet's signature programme, is designed to introduce students in grades four, five and six to the world of dance through free workshops and performances. Canada's National Ballet School, also commonly known as the National Ballet School of Canada, is a classical ballet school located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Along with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, it is a provider of professional ballet training in Canada. The National Ballet of Canada was formed in 1951 by the English ballet dancer Celia Franca, who had previously been a dancer with ballet companies in the United Kingdom. Franca immigrated to Canada in 1951 and founded the National Ballet of Canada that same year, also hiring the English ballet teacher Betty Oliphant to work with the company. As the National Ballet became established, Franca and Oliphant decided to create a ballet academy to train dancers for the company. The school, modeled after Britain's Royal Ballet School, opened in 1959 in a former Quaker meeting house at 111 Maitland Street in Toronto, a building purchased for the school by the National Ballet Guild at a cost of $80,000. Oliphant became the school's first Artistic Director.
