Hardcover. Zustand: Good. A good condition copy. No dust jacket. Age stained boards and spine are edgeworn with some fraying to cloth. Hinges and textblock cracked but still holding. Front free end pages missing. Contents have occasional spotting with tanned edges but overall a good clear book. Good condition is defined as: a copy that has been read but remains in clean condition. All of the pages are intact and the cover is intact and the spine may show signs of wear. Nine sermons preached during the year 1852 by Christopher Wordsworth at Westminster Abbey on the subject of the Irish Church and its history. This is the fourth volume of Wordsworth's lectures (including sermons XXV-XXXIII). Extensively footnoted with original quotations and source references. Sermons: Introductory Discourse on the Church History of Ireland; On the Age of St. Patrick; On the Age of St. Columba; Invasion of Henry II; Interval between Henry II and Henry VIII; Commencement of the Reformation in Ireland in the Reign of Henry VIII; The Reformation in Ireland in the Reigns of Kind Edward VI and Queen Elizabeth; Hindrances of the Irish Church; Hopes of the Irish Church--Conclusion. [The earlier three volumes of sermons topically address church doctrine, issues around authority and the Bishop of Rome, and catechesis and eduction, respectively.] Christopher Wordsworth (1807-1885) was an Anglican bishop (Bishop of Lincoln) and the Canon and Archdeacon Westminster Abbey. He was the nephew of the celebrated poet William Wordsworth and is buried in Lincoln Cathedral.

Device in gilt to front covers. Spines have 5 raised bands, each highlighted with gilt stippling. Inserts are decoratively stamped with ornate tilt. Titling in gilt over burgundy inserts. Volume 1 has the Gospels plus a Collation of Codex Sinaiticus. Volume 2 has the rest of the New Testament Commentaries with various Indexes. Wordsworth was Bishop of Lincoln, a scholar and hymn-writer. VERY GOOD. Textblocks appear clean with pages bright. Bindings sound. Gilt bright. Covers bright. Small bookplate pasted to inside front cover of Vol. 1.
