Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. Dr James (Jim) Deeny (1906-1994) started medical practice in Lurgan [Co. Armagh] in the hungry thirties. He produced remarkable local surveys of malnutrition, infant mortality and tuberculosis, the first of their kind in Ireland. Aged 38 he was appointed Chief Medical Adviser to the Department of Health in Dublin. Later worked with the World Health Organisation, before finally retiring to farm at Tagoat, County Wexford. In the chapter 'Two Irish Studies' Dr. Deeny wonderfully describes A Year in Fanad [Donegal] in the early 1970s which started with his journey as a trout angler to Sessiagh, and later Mulroy Bay sea-trout. Uncommon Hardback, 312 pages plus, section of twenty black & white photographs. SIGNED by author on front free endpaper and dated by him 1/4/89. The inscription reads 'For Sheelagh With Love from Jim [Dr Sheelagh Woods 1908-2001 was a sister of James Deeny and one of the first women to qualify in medicine at Queen's University, Belfast 1930]. Signed by Author(s).
