Soft cover. Zustand: Good to Very Good. C.R.W. Nevinson (illustrator). First Edition. 1918. First edition. Unpaginated but [ix] followed by 15 full-page colour illustrations with facing explanatory text. British Artists at the Front was a publication series created in 1918 by Wellington House - also known as the War Propaganda Bureau. The Bureau was overseen by Charles Masterman, head of wartime propaganda, at the instruction of the British government. Wellington House is not named in these pages. The series was published by Country Life, thus apparently providing a neutral, dissociated front for the Propaganda Bureau. Much of Wellington House?s work was clandestine and its activities did not become public knowledge until the 1930s. Masterman favoured ?truthful? propaganda - work that was grounded in ?honest? depictions of the war. In reality, however, the artists were directed by Wellington House to paint particular scenes and events. Each volume features the work of the following official British War Artists, and this first volume contains the work of Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson ARA (1889-1946), an English figure and landscape painter, etcher and lithographer, who was one of the most famous war artists of World War I. The book is bound in the original card covers with titlin and a colour illustration on the front cover and a list of contents together with details of another publication on the rear cover. The book is in good to very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling and light foxing on the covers. The overlapping edges of the covers are creased with some nicks and the corners are bumped. There is some damage to the bottom 1 1/2" of the spine and the top of the spine is bumped with damage with some loss to about 1 1/2". The contents are secure and clean with some rust staining from a paper clip on the top edge of the inside of the front cover and the title-page. There is no inscription.
