Also the end papers with the same speckled design and top page edges are gold gilt. A superb Victorian book that has the Armorial bookplate of the Audenham House, Herts. Manuscript in ink, 4to (227 x 173mm), one page, with integral address leaf; small tear in centre of both leaves, very slightly affecting the text; another tear at top left, possibly where a later endorsement deleted; small seals (one damaged when the letter was opened) on address leaf, showing James's monogram; with remains of green ribbon. A fine letter in French from James II, written when he was Duke of York and in temporary exile on the continent. It was his second spell in exile, of course, the first being between 1648 and 1660. This time, as the heir to the throne who would not renounce his adherence to Rome, he was sent abroad whilst the Popish Plot ran its course: he left for Brussels in March 1679, and stayed there until September, after which he was sent by his brother up to Scotland. This letter is addressed to the Duchesse de Bouillon: she was Marie-Anne Mancini (1649-1714), niece of Cardinal Mazarin, who brought her to Paris with her four sisters, in order to consolidate his power by marrying well. Her marriage to the Duc de Bouillon in 1662 was followed by infidelity, and the year after his letter was written, she was accused of plotting to kill her husband in order to marry his nephew (and was acquitted). She established a salon at their Paris hôtel, and she acted as patron to a number of literary men, among them Jean de la Fontaine. James addresses the Duchess as 'Ma Cousine', for she was related to him through his second wife, Mary of Modena - but he might also have felt kinship because her sister, Hortense, had recently become one of his brother's mistresses. Marie-Anne had clearly written to him with words of comfort, having no doubt heard of his being forced into exile: he writes that he has received with much joy 'les assurences vous m'avez donné de nouveau, par votre lettre, que j'ay recue dupuis [sic] mon arrivee icy', and he goes on to say: 'je vous prie de croire que j'en ay la reconnoisence que je dois, et que je serez toute ma vie avec beaucoup de verite. votre tresaffectionne Cousin Jacques'. In James's third and final exile, from 1688 until his death in 1701, he probably encountered her again, although by this time she had lost almost all favour with the court of Louix XIV. A fine and attractive letter by James, complete with his seal impressed with his monogram 'JD', as is seen on bindings for him done at the time.

This copy lacking the prints by Francis, Warhol, Rauschenberg , Wesselmann, Lichtenstein; one of two by Ramos and Indiana are present.Walasse Ting (1929?2010) was a Chinese-American visual artist and poet. Born in Shanghai, he left China in 1946 and lived in the British colony of Hong Kong for six years before settling in Paris where he anglicized his Chinese name, tacking on ?sse? in emulation of the famed painter Henri Matisse. In Paris, Ting became associated with the CoBrA group whose expressionist style of painting was inspired by the art of children. In 1957, bolstered by newfound success as a painter, he relocated to the United States and settled in New York City.In 1961, while living in a one-room studio near Times Square, Ting wrote a series of sixty-one poems. These poems communicate the wide-eyed ambition of a recent immigrant. They are simultaneously spiritual and secular, jarring and joyful. His use of free form text references both the tone and metrical patterns of classical Chinese poetry and the rhythm of the American Beat prose, Jazz music, and the urban environment. Each page radiates with a breathless immediacy that exudes a sense of the vital dynamism of New York City in the early 1960s as Ting was experiencing it.I wrote 61 poems in '61 in a small black room like coffin, inside room only salami, whisky?photographs from Times Square ?no cookbook, no telephone book, no check-book. Two short fingers, typing talking about World & Garbage, You & I, Egg & Earth. - Walasse TingThe portfolio reflects Ting's desire to capture the zeitgeist of a creative community caught between European abstraction and Pop Art, specifically those artists who, like Ting, bridged both the European and American avant-garde movements. Containing sixty-two lithographs by twenty-eight artists, reproductions of French, Japanese, and American advertisements, postage stamps, photographs, Chinese seals, and sixty-one letterpress poems by Ting set in multicolored inks, the portfolio was edited by Sam Francis and printed in Paris by Maurice Beudet with typography by George Girard.
