Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. Keith Guyan (illustrator). Second Edition-Reprint from 1936. Edited and introduced by Robert Goodman, this book was first published in 1936 when it was very favourably reviewed both in London and New York, however with its reputation being so high it was decided it was very worthy of republication. The setting is Auckland and the dairying country of Waikato. The landscape, the climate, and the farming routine are strongly evoked, but it is the subtety and force with which the burgeoning and dying of a marriage are related which makes this novel memorable. Miss Escott was the first living author to be represented in the New Zealand Fiction series. the book is clean, bright and tidy and the cover is good, being slightly rubbed back corner and edge with one very tiny teat to bottom back. top edge slightly worn as is top of spine. small crease bottom front., otherwise neat. the cover shows an excellent piece of artwork by Keith Guyan based on a photograph supplied by Auckland Public Library. there are two small stains inside front cover and a pencil price has been rubbed out. Book.

Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. ESCOTT, Margaret. Show Down. London: Chatto and Windus. 1936. First UK edition. The New Zealand author's final novelshe only published three, destroying later manuscripts while employed in a plethora of roles in farming, education, and broadcasting. This her most famous of the three, about a native farmer and his relationship with a wealthy woman newly arrived from England. It was published as I Told My Love in the US (see below). Both editions were published under the name M. Escott with no reference to the author's gender; Sean O'Faolain, reviewing it in The Spectator, presumed Escott a male, suggesting the book's handling of romance and extramarital affairs could well be written by Hemingway. Some praise! Escott enjoyed the success of the book but failed to produce anything else, despite being only 28 at the time of publication. It has since been reprinted. A very good book with some light marks to the textblock, the book gently rolled. The dust jacket unclipped with the spine panel darkened and a few closed tears along edges. Very scarce.

Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. ESCOTT, Margaret. I Told My Love. New York: Norton .1936. The first US edition of the above, published under a different title with the jacket designed by Cleo Wilkins, (this bookseller sides with the uncredited British edition, just about). Presumably, publishers Norton sought to appeal to romance readers as much as anybody else, and the deco jacket certainly builds on this theory. But like its British counterpart, the M. Escott was used with no reference to the author's true identity. A near fine book, the cloth clean and just a little sunned to the extremities and corners and tips very lightly bumped, but the binding tight and square, the textblock relatively clean with a handful of tiny spots to the top edge. The contents fine throughout. The dust jacket not price-clipped ($2.50) but with the corners of flaps neatly cut by the publisher. Some edges and spine tips with some shallow nicks, some creasing and a little rubbing along the joints, but a more than respectable copy of this scarce US edition nonetheless.
