This is a book about the humanity and the undeterred spirit of an amazing group of women, ages 50 to 91, who believe that life's problems are simply challenges to be overcome, not barriers to paralyze. This book is not about sports - but the women featured did compete in the National Senior Olympic Games. These adventurous women came in different sizes, shapes and ages from all across the country. They came to compete and challenge themselves while challenging one another. It took lots of hard work, determination and a focused mind to arrive at the national games. They had practiced many hours and they were committed to giving the games their best shot. One could see in their faces hope, courage, tenacity and joy. The author went to the Senior Olympic Games to capture in words and pictures the vitality of an amazing group of women. Many of the women in this book took up sports late in life. Some had overcome serious health problems; others had watched friends and family members become ill and vowed to take control while they could. Others found themselves turning to sports and competition following major life transitions: divorce, retirement, empty-nesters. A few women were self-proclaimed couch potatoes not many years ago - today they are competing for medals. Other women were always active and relied on sports for physical and psychological fulfillment. Sports were something they had built into their lives during youth and would never give up. Some admitted that when they were younger they were overly competitive and hard on themselves.
