(3 ll.), xiii pp. *** FIRST EDITION. The author of this birthday panegyric on Pedro da Mota e Sylva was a subordinate of Mota e Sylva at the Secretaria dos Negocios do Reyno. The praise is effusive, for example: "Vossa Excellencia he hum tal Ministro, que o desejão para seu Secretario todos os Principes da Europa" (p. iii). A second edition appeared in the same year.Filippe José da Gama (1713-1779?), a native of Lisbon, was a member of the Academia Real da Historia Portugueza and published a number of orations and eulogies. His Censura, on the rules of translation, filled 38 page in Thomas José de Aquino's Tradução portugueza da Ode IV do livro IV de Quinto Horacio Flacco, Lisbon, 1761. According to Innocêncio, Gama disparaged Verney's efforts at translation, which led Verney in his Verdadeiro methodo to refer to Gama as "pessoa pouco menos que desconhecida."*** Innocêncio II, 298; on the Censura, VII, 347. Porbase locates a single copy, at the Universidade Católica Portuguesa-Biblioteca João Paulo II, apparently with only 2 preliminary leaves (calls for [4], 13 pp.). Not located in Copac. The subject of this funeral oration, Manoel Caetano de Sousa (1658-1734), was a clerigo regular theatino, a founding member of the Academia Real da História and its first director. He was also a member of various other academies of his day. According to Innocêncio he published nearly 300 works, most of them in Latin. D. Francisco Xavier de Meneses, Marquês de Ericeira, an intimate friend, wrote a Catálogo of his writings, both printed and manuscript. Manoel Caetano de Sousa was the elder brother of António Caetano de Sousa, author of the monumental História genealógica da Casa Real Portuguesa.Filipe José da Gama (1713-before 1779), was also a member of the Academia Real da História and various other academies. He wrote a number of similar funeral eulogies, including one for D. Fr. Bartholomeu do Pimar, first bishop of Grão Pará, published in 1734.The volume includes on pp. 125-32 a "Romance endecasyllabo," by Braz Joseph Rebello Leite.*** Innocêncio II, 299. The author (1808-1875) was a native of Bahia, son of its governor.
