Single Leaf Page from Geneva Bible Book of Romans. 1597 Geneva bible leaf from the book of romans 13:11-15:19 page " brotherly love" vgc. London 1597. Over 400 year old Geneva "Breeches" bible leaf printed in London by the deputies of Christopher Barker "printer to the queenes most excellent maieftie anno dom. 1597 " - the book of romans. Recto has romans 13:11 - 14:14 "brotherly love & gentiles called" verso of the leaf has romans 14:15 - 15:19 "the weake brethren & god the judge" Leaf measures 10 3/8" x 7" (262mm x 177mm) printed on old cotton linen paper also called rag paper. The Geneva Bible is one of the most historically significant translations of the Bible into English, preceding the King James Version by 51 years. It was the primary Bible of 16th-century English Protestantism and was the Bible used by William Shakespeare and Oliver Cromwell. It was one of the Bibles taken to America on the Mayflower. This version of the Bible is significant because, for the very first time, a mechanically printed, mass-produced Bible was made available directly to the general public which came with a variety of scriptural study guides and aids (collectively called an apparatus), which included verse citations that allow the reader to cross-reference one verse with numerous relevant verses in the rest of the Bible, introductions to each book of the Bible that acted to summarize all of the material that each book would cover, maps, tables, woodcut illustrations and indices. The annotations which are an important part of the Geneva Bible were Calvinist and Puritan in character, and as such they were disliked by the ruling pro-government Anglicans of the Church of England, as well as King James I, who commissioned the "Authorized Version", or King James Bible, in order to replace it. Surprisingly, the Geneva notes were included in a few editions of the King James version, even as late as 1715.

Note: The nickname Goose Bible is derived from the bird in the device to the title page of the Metrical Psalms. This Geneva version, printed in Dordt, is more accurate than the other versions and closely follows the printing of the 1560 first edition Geneva Bible. The majority of Geneva Bibles dated 1599 were printed in Amsterdam after King James banned the printing of the Geneva Bible in 1616 to encourage the production of his sponsored translation. The Geneva Bible remained popular and began to be printed on the continent and imported into England. Archbishop Laud banned the importation of the Geneva Bible into England in the 1630s, forcing printers to add a title page claiming they were printed in London by Christopher Barker in 1599 to continue importation. The popularity of the Geneva Bible remained steadfast for over 100 years, and the vast number of 1599 Geneva Bibles available today serve as clear evidence that the King James Bible did not become the dominant text very quickly. A Bible probably printed for the use of English puritans in the Low Countries in the early 17th century. The metrical psalms are included, with a separate title and register. The Geneva version, translated by William Whittingham and other Marian exiles, went through more than 70 editions between 1560 and 1640. Although folio versions were produced for pulpit use, this was primarily a household Bible, typically printed as here in small, manageable quartos. Geneva Bibles with 1599 imprints have a complex bibliographical history. Herbert identifies at least eight distinct editions, and notes that "the nominal date, 1599, is probably untrue in almost every case; they were apparently published at different times in Amsterdam and Dort and adopted by Barker" (p. 115). The present text (Herbert's edition B), was printed from the earliest of these editions "at a somewhat later date" (p. 116). Geneva Bibles with 1599 imprints reprint the previous Geneva quartos in Roman type, albeit with Franciscus Junius's vehemently antipapal translation of Revelations - a change replicated in most Roman-type editions from 1602 onwards. Many such Bibles were smuggled into England during the upsurge of Laudianism in 1633 (Betteridge, p. 44). Darlow & Moule 189; Herbert 249. Maurice Betteridge, "The Bitter Notes: The Geneva Bible and Its Annotations", The Sixteenth Century Journal, Vol. 14, No. 1, 1983. Quarto in eights (217 x 169 mm). Late 17th-century or early 18th-century English panelled calf with alternating light and dark panels, neatly rebacked to style, spine with raised bands tooled in blind and red morocco label, covers with fillets and tooled borders in blind, floral corner tools, edges red. Engraved title page, letterpress title page with woodcut vignette, divisional titles, woodcut initials, tailpieces, and illustrations in the text. Contemporary ink inscription of "Cha. Pax His Book" to title page. Covers and extremities professionally restored. Light rubbing and marks to calf, minor browning, foxing, and damp-staining to endpapers and contents, engraved title page soiled and creased, upper outer quarter of OO8 torn away with resulting loss of text, upper outer corner of Fff8 chipped, affecting only the headline and foliation. A very good copy.

[6],322,[19] leaves; [12],136,[16]pp. Quarto. Full 19th century crushed levant, raised bands, gilt inner dentelles, a.e.g. by Jenkins & Cecil. Both titles within elaborate woodcut borders, with woodcut map on verso of 8 and Royal Arms at conclusion of St. John. Woodcut initials. Texts in black letter, that in the second work in double columns. The first work wants the two preliminary blanks and the final blank. Joints rubbed, clearly washed and pressed at the time of binding, though with occasional light foxing and minor spotting remaining, a handful of small marginal repairs, lower margins of U2-3 in second work a bit frayed (with a few small chips not affecting text), old vertical crease in title pressed flat; generally a very good (if somewhat processed) copy. The Geneva - Tomson text of the New Testament, revised by Tomson from the translation by Whittingham, Gilby, Sampson and others. First printed in 1576, Tomson's revision eventually became the final and most popular version of the Geneva text. The edition of the Psalms by Sternhold and Hopkins was first published in its complete form in 1562, and was frequently reprinted, often to be bound to accompany other editions of the Bible. Buch Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition, Illustrated Edition. Edinburgh: Arbuthnot and Bassandyne, 1579. Folio (12.5 x 8.5 in.). An illustrated Geneva Bible, the first Bible printed in Scotland. The printing was begun by Bassandyne, whose name appears on the New Testament title page, but was finished by Arbuthnot three years later. Description: General title page (1579) with the arms of Jacob Sextus, supported by two unicorns, with the words God Save the King. Set of 26 illustrations. The maps at Numbers 33 and Ezekiel are in facsimile. Includes the Apocrypha as issued. New Testament title page (1576) with similar woodcut. Woodcut first chapter initials, woodcuts, and colophons. Collation: [par]^8, a-z^6, aa-zz^6, aaa-zzz^6, aaaa-pppp^6, A-Y^6, Z^8. Lacks Y6, Z1, Z7 from the Table with Z2-6 provided in good facsimile. The eight preliminary leaves following the general title also provided in good facsimile. Binding: Modern brown paneled calf. Double blind-rolled and ruled panels with corner fleurons to boards. Spine with five blind-ruled raised bands and extensive tooling to compartments. One red morocco label with the words Holy Bible lettered in gilt and the words Edinburgh 1579 in gilt to bottom of spine. Plain endpapers. Condition: General title page mounted on a stub and inserted from another copy. The following 8 preliminary leaves are supplied in good facsimile; a1-e2 (Gen 1-Ex 3:21) the edges are defective, at first affecting sidenotes and text, but gradually improving so that the repairs to the bottom margins of e3-4 affect only the catchword; though the repairs are crude and the whole is unsightly, relatively little text is missing. Headlines are occasionally shaved or even cropped; the bottom & outer margins are occasionally smaller, perhaps indicating that the leaves in question have been inserted from a smaller copy (e.g. kk, hhh); Qq6 there is a hole (perhaps a paper flaw) toward the top of the outer column, removing a few letters on 4 lines of text; Xx5 the bottom 3 is torn from the outer margin, removing a couple of letters from the bottom 10 lines of the sidenotes; the Psalms is somewhat soiled from use; Dd2 the bottom outer corner has been torn away, removing text from about 6 lines, and has been crudely repaired; Ss1 (Dan 2) the bottom outer corner is torn away, removing a few words from 3 lines of sidenotes; Ttt3 a closed tear, crudely repaired and the bottom outer corner is torn from this leaf; there are a few minor marginal repairs in the NT; toward the end of the NT the bottom outer corners are somewhat rounded, occasionally removing a few letters of sidenotes (e.g., R4, S2-3, V1-2); V3 onward (Jude) there are various relatively crude repairs, with marginal defects (minor at first, but growing in the Brief Table which follows Revelation). Note: The General Assembly of the [by then Presbyterian] Church of Scotland ordered every parish to subscribe the purchase price before the printing was begun. The heavy use these Bibles received in churches accounts for the fact that very few copies have survived in even moderately decent condition; the present copy is in much better than average condition. A good example of an important landmark in the history of the publication of the Bible. RBH shows only seven copies at auction in the last 50 years.
