Hardcover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. Gretter, J. Clemens (illustrator). Tan tweed cover with brown lettering. Discoloration on back and spine, with a "14" inked on spine. Pages have some foxing, but clean and tight. Orange and white drawings by Gretta inside covers.
Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. Gretter, Clemens (dust jacket art) (illustrator). Reprint. Volume 1 in this series. Bound in green cloth with titles and rules stamped in black. No illustrations. Reprint circa 1930 listing 4 titles on the rear flap of the dust wrapper. This copy lacks the requisite illustrated endpapers and 8 pages of aerial acrobatics found at the rear of the first edition, which also has blue cloth and cover lettering stamped in gilt. There are no ads at the rear. The cloth shows only a hint of edgewear; the dust jacket has moderate edgewear with shallow chipping at the head and heel, and a 1" chip to the lower front panel at the spine. Former owner's info in ink to the front pastedown, with later pencil inscription to the ffe. Hinges solid; binding square. A clean, tight copy, with the wrapper now in mylar. The jacket art is not signed, but it is clearly Gretter's work. He became established at R&L in 1927 and worked there until moving to NY in 1932, when he began signing his work as "J. Clemens Gretta". Mattson & Davis 01625.

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. Stunning full-color dogfight cover art (and orange endpapers) by "J. Clemens Gretter" (J. Clemens Gretta, 1904-1988) (illustrator). Pages still intact and legible but seriously browned as frequently found with these 1941-era Grosset & Dunlap printings -- we reduce book grade from "very good" to "good" due to the serious toning of this acidic stock. Catalog of Hardy Boys Stories at rear lists through "Mystery of the Flying Express" (1941), but the stunning "dogfight" cover art and orange endpapers by J. Clemens Gretta (1904-1988) remain bright (though moderately faded to spine.) 18 Ted Scott titles to rear panel, through "Castaways of the Stratosphere.".

Buch
Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. Endpapers, matte-paper frontispiece, and marvelous color dust jacket art by J. Clemens Gretter (Gretta) (illustrator). Front flap lists 25 HBs through "The Secret Panel" (1946.) Rear flap lists Fran Striker's "The Lone Ranger and the Outlaw Stronghold" (1939), only. Jacket rear panel lists seven Lucky Terrell Flying Stories through "The Flying Jet" (1945.) With a recommended price of 6565, this is the 1946B-17 printing of this Hardy Boys adventure, per Carpentieri & Mular Fifth Edition 2004. Wartime paper has not darkened too badly, but HAS become somewhat fragile to page edges, and a previous owner has closed some edge tears to pp. 177-182 -- including a larger corner separation to pp. 181-182 -- with clear "Magic" tape. While none of this tape covers any text, these reasonably careful repairs nonetheless reduce our book grade here from "very good" to "good." One of Gretta's most marvelous (some have called his color palette "hallucinogenic") jacket illustrations (with minor chipping to head and heel of spine, only), and a somewhat less common title from the series. 215 followed by single page ad listing 24 HBs through "Short-Wave Mystery" (1945.) Reduced from $30.
