New York, July 20, 1895. [1]p. Signed Holograph Inscription. Approx. 7¼ x 6 inches. Partly printed leaf of hotel stationery tipped onto a backing sheet. With later, brief pencil annotation. Folds; lower corners creased and a few short closed tears in right margin; tone lines on left and right; glue remnants on verso and small piece of paper tipped-on along bottom edge; signature clean. Autograph inscription by Bracebridge Hemyng (1841-1901), British barrister and author, best known in the United States for the "Jack Harkaway" series of dime novels. Hemyng wrote many other dime novels and other works of science or speculative fiction. The inscription reads in full: "20 July [189]5 Bracebridge Hemyng with Comps. to Mrs. A.W. Eastlake." A later pencil annotation reads "('Jack Harkaway')." From the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction: "His sf novel, The Commune in London, or Thirty Years Hence: A Chapter of Anticipated History.is an anti-Communard version of the 1871 uprising in Paris as translated into a UK already deeply anxious about threatened upheavals and Invasions. The fit between the Jules Verne character and the Captain Nemo, in The Scapegrace at Sea; Or, the Adventures of Dick Lightheart: His Adventures on the Sea, Under the Sea, On the Earth, and in the Centre of the Earth.is so tight that Jess Nevins, describing the tale in his The Encyclopedia of Fantastic Victoriana (2005), calls it plagiarism. The Spirit World.contains mostly supernatural tales." Note. 1. Authors : Hemyng, Bracebridge : SFE : Science Fiction Encyclopedia accessed online.

Buch Erstausgabe
Half-Calf. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. 107 pages, consisting of 6 tales of the macabre & mysterious. Half calf, marbled boards, rubbed at extremes, olivine endpapers, blank half-title has name cut/removed from top outer corner, contents clean and fox free, hinge splitting at front edge of spine near bottom. Small slim octavo. A bracing adventure of mystery and ghost story writer and later creator of "Jack Harkaway", he died in 1901. He contributed most of the banned "Prostitution" section of Henry Mayhew's London Labour and the London Poor in early 1860's. Was educated at Eton and became a Barrister in Lincoln's Inn in 1862, saw so few cases he became known as "Briefless Bracebridge". Went on to a career as a writer and managing to put a fair amount of food on the table at it, his last work in 1899 was a Harkaway adventure. He was extremely well received in the USA and stayed there in the 1870's. ** The BL has only a reprint copy of 1866 with 2 titles joined "On the Line and Danger Signal". This single copy found seems to represent the only institutional copy located in the UK. Very Scarce. *SEE: Hubin Vol 4 of CRIME FICTION IV: A Comprehensive Bibliography, 1749-2000.
