Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. Early reprint of the famous adventurer's memoirs as copyrighted by the editor in 1927. A Star Book in which the extended subtitle adds the following: "[T]he works written by himself at the age of seventy-three and the life, with such of his philosophy as is the gift of age and experience taken down here and edited by Ethelreda Lewis". Foreword by John Galsworthy. Good Plus/Good Plus. Green cloth boards with embossed design of Trader Horn on the upper cover, black lettering on the spine. Lightly bumped spine head / tail with a very small cut in the spine head cloth and an approx. 1" tear upward from the tail of the spine along the rear edge. The top edge text block has some sun / dust-darkening. Map end papers with the prior owner's initials and the date "5/22/29" in ink on the ffep. Remaining contents are clean and firmly bound, albeit somewhat age-tanned consistent with the age of the book. The illustrated dj, now in a clear jacket cover, is tanned and has a few small chips and tears along the edges. The dj's spine is also sun-darkened. Still an attractive, solid copy, and an interesting read!.

Zustand: Good. 7th impression. Cloth, VG. 320pp, b/w frontis, spine a little sunned, cloth rubbed & slightly tired looking, otherwise a nice copy. The first volume of Trader Horn's autobiography, detailing his days as an Ivory merchant in the 1870s on the West Coast of Africa. The work details his exploits, including rescuing slaves & in particular his saving of a princess who has been held captive. The book is of its time, with many casual references to shooting big game, although Trader Horn does have a genuine respect of the African people. Alfred Aloysius Smith [ 1861 - 1931 ]. 600 grams.
