Hard Cover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First Edition. This volume presents 706 letters (250 of them unpublished) for the years 1840 and 1841, which saw the publication of The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge within the framework of Master Humphrey's Clock. The letters mark the progress of his work, and the manuscripts of the two novels have been drawn on to clarify his many references to them. Before the volume ends Dickens had been recognized by many as a master of pathos, had been lionised in Edinburgh, and could dictate terms to his publishers. His circle of close friends had widened to include Macready, Macuse, Landor and Lord Jeffrey. The Volume ends on the eve of his departure for America. Thanks to his later holocausts oniy a few scattered letters to Dickens himself have survived-except for the year 1841. But 125 letters of that year he deposited with his solicitor on leaving England, and then forgot. This volume draws extensively on these letters in its notes. The impact he made on his friends is revealed, and simultaneously they emerge as people in their own right. Hardcover, red cloth with gilt lettering on the spine within a pale blue panel, in red and pale yellow dustwrapper. xx, 547 pages, Illustrated with a frontispiece plus facsimiles of letters and a map of Dickens' Highland tour. 6.25 X 9.5 inches.Near fine book in a near fine price clipped dustwrapper.

Hard Cover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. First Edition. This volume presents 772 letters, 264 of them published here for the first time and many others not until now collected. The years covered are 1842 and 1843; and the central subject is inevitably Dickens in relation to America.JanuarytoJune 1842 covers his first visit there, the adulation which greeted him, the alteration in his feeling for the country and the country's for him (much use is made, in the annotation, of American newspaper comment). The results are seen in American Notes and the American chapters of Martin Chuzlewit. Later interests are reflected in A Christmas Carol, published at the end of 1843. In the autumn, hard pressed for money, he decides to remove himself and family to Italy in 1844. Hardcover, red cloth with gilt lettering on the spine within a pale blue panel, in red and pale yellow dustwrapper. xxv, 692 pages, some illustration including a map of Dickens' American travels. 6.25 X 9.5 inches.Near fine book in a near fine price clipped dustwrapper.

All in dust wrappers, the wrapper of one volume a little torn at the foot and a few little tears at the spine ends of a couple of other volumes, signature of SALLY LEDGER in v.12, Review slip for v.2 added, a particularly nice set. *SALLY LEDGER [1961-2009], was a Professor of Victorian literature who made major contributions to the fields of nineteenth-century women's writing, literary feminism, and the study of Charles Dickens. Unsurprisingly, Dickens wrote a large number of letters - this wonderful set includes 14,252. V.12 contains 1151, of which 427 are published for the first time and 76 for the first time complete; 750 have been transcribed from originals, facsimiles, or photocopies. An Addenda of a further 255 letters belonging to the first eleven volumes, discovered since the first such collection was published as Appendix A in the seventh volume, is now printed in volume twelve, fully annotated, as Appendix A (this includes corrigenda to all the earlier volumes); of these, 133 are new letters, 34 are given complete for the first time, and 176 have been transcribed from facsimiles or photocopies.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. British Academy 'Pilgrim Edition'. A complete set of twelve volumes in very presentable (VG+) condition, with each volume being internally clean and unmarked throughout with page edges crisp and free from creasing or thumbing. Vols. 1 and 5 some mild curvature and waviness to the pages seemingly caused by previous storage conditions, and resulting in some slight unevenness and gaping along the front edges, but not affecting the integrity of the binding or the overall visual presentability of the volume. Vols. 1, 3, and 11 also exhibit a slight lean to the book-block, again likely due to previous storage conditions. All dust jackets are present and complete, vols. 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, and 9 have some mild rippling along the corners and ends, and some very faint handling/rubbing marks along the spine, but the overall impression of the set as a whole remains very good. This item is very heavy, and additional fees for overseas delivery are likely to be high. Why on Amazon do most sellers not describe their actual book?
