Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 135-141. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author. - Slightly bumped, light-stained, author's name underlined, some pencil annotations. - From the text: The Thirteenth Epode is an intriguing poem. Like Carm. I. 7 it concludes dramatically with a highly condensed episode from epic tradition, in this case drawn from the early life of Achilles; but, unlike the Ode to Plancus, Epodes 13 does not reveal even the name of the addressee. And whether in spite of or because of this, the poem has been highly praised for its purely lyrical qualities. The now famous critique of E. Fraenkel, for example, represents the view of many: 'A perfect poem,' he calls it; '. . . its depth of feeling and beauty of expression and the harmonious blending of ideas of very different origin, make this ode superior to Odes 1. 7. The general approval of its poetic qualities might encourage a fresh attempt to discover any deeper significance it might have held for Horace's contemporaries. Offprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp.63-70. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author to W. Haase. - Creased in the center, otherwise immaculate. - From the text: In his 1977 commentary on Aeneid VI, the late R. G. Austin dismissed all attempts past and future to discover what Vergil intended by his reference to "twin gates of sleep" (6.893-98): "The matter remains a Vergilian enigma (and none the worse for that)." The amount of subsequent bibliography on this topic shows that Austin certainly did not succeed.1 Here is one further attempt to discover it based on the actual properties of horn and ivory as materials used in ancient architecture and technology. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication to W. Haase. - Autor's name underlined on cover, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: "Which of your novels interests you the most?" "The Heart That Knows was most important to me. It is valuable as presentation of life, but is not particularly good in construction." Charles G. D. Roberts was speaking in Toronto in 1927 to Lorne Pierce, editor of the Ryerson Press, twenty-one years after the novel's publication in Boston in 1906. That year he had written in some anticipation to Snowdon Dunn Scott, editor of the Saint John Sun: I hope you will find my new novel, (which is about to appear Sept 1st) of some special interest to you. The scene is laid in Sackville & Westcock & my beloved Tantramar. The press and periodical reviews of the book were mixed. The Academy gave only a summary of the plot. Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 127-151. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication to W. Haase. - A very good and clean copy. - From the text: The Dosso Dossi Exhibition held in Ferrara, New York, and Los Angeles in 1998-1999 produced a new awareness of the works of the Dossi brothers of Ferrara, Dosso (1486-1534) and Battista (ca. 1492-ca.l548), marking the five-hundredth anniversary of the dispersal of the Este family's art collections after the death of Alfonso II in1598. Reproductions of the paintings, with commentaries, bibliographies, x-radiographs, and accounts of their conservation and interpretation are presented in the splendid volume by Peter Humfrey, Mauro Lucco, et al., Dosso Dossi: Court Painter in Renaissance Ferrara. Critic Robert Hughes commented as follows for Time Magazine, The hothouse atmosphere of the Este court shows in Dosso's major works: they tend to be playful, elaborately poetic and almost impossible to connect to the usual literary sources, as though they were suggested by highly sophisticated people dreaming up ever more obscure secular concetti. In a word, the paintings are totally mannerist; even today scholars don't agree on what they're actually about. Their oddity is deepened by the fact that Dosso made them up as he went along, adding figures and painting them out as the whim took him, rather than sticking to a preset program of images. Author's private copy. Zustand: Gut. pp. 111-134. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author R. Kilpatrick to W. Haase. - 1st page a bit stained, else clean. - From the text: In 1981 Peter Meller referred to the many contradictory interpretations of Giorgione's painting "The Three Philosophers" (figure 1) , as a "vicious circle." Only three years previously, Salvatore Settis had surveyed the critical history of the painting in La "Tempesta" Interpreta-ta (1978), to reargue the case made two centuries earlier in 1783 that its three figures portrayed there were the "Three Magi." Meller reexamined its iconography from the clues offered by Marcantonio Michiel in his celebrated note of 1525 written after seeing it in the house of Taddeo Contarini in Venice: namely, "three philosophers . marvelously imitated rock . rays of the sun . landscape," and concluded that we are looking at Plato as metaphysician standing with two pupils before his own metaphorical cave. If the images of bare and leafed trees, ivy and fig, dark and light, represent original sin and resurrection, then we might have "un típico paesaggio moralizzato" in which the Platonic parable prefigures Christianity. Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 123-131, 8 fig. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication to W. Haase. - Autor's name handwritten on cover, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: A decade ago Elhanan Motzkin published a comprehensive interpretation of the painting in the Louvre by Titian (or Giorgione, or Giorgione and Titian) Le Concert champêtre [Fig. 1]. He explained it as a "mythology," with its two nude female figures as "Inspiration" (left) and the Muse Euterpe (= "Music"). The two young men sitting in the meadow near the well were to be Apollo instructing Paris in the art of the lute; and the rustic herdsman with bagpipe in the background, the foster-father who reared the infant Paris after his exposure by Priam and Hecuba. Motzkin provided critiques of earlier interpretations of the work by Philip Fehl (1957), Edgar Wind (1958), Patricia Egan (1959), and Francis Haskell (1987). Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
