Pamphlet. 1st edition. 37 p.; 21 cm. `It appears, then, that the Reformers deplored the mixing of the state with and into the Church, (Luther calling it a work of Satan,) and they complained of the evils resulting from it. At the same time they expressed themselves in favor of the Episcopal government of the Church. Their utterances on this subject are numerous and decided, and there is no doubt, if they could have had their way, the Episcopate, cleansed of popish abuses, would have been retained. Luther held that the Church could be best governed and preserved with the Episcopate, and said: "We may see how necessary and useful the Episcopal office in the Christian Church is, by the evils that have occurred since it has been abolished."' (p. 17) Fair, side sewn. Front of tan wrapper loose, rear lacking.
