Publius Papinius Statius (c. 45 - c. 96 CE) was a young man at the time of the Year of the Four Emperors (69 CE) when, upon the death of Nero, the Roman Empire was rocked by general civil war, with four generals - Otho, Galba, Vitellius, and Vespasian - each gaining temporary control of the empire until the matter was settled with the ultimate victory of Vespasian. Indeed civil war was a recurrent feature of Roman politics from the Late Republic until the final collapse of Roman rule in the west in 476. So Statius would have been interested in civil war just as his near contemporary Lucan was with his epic concerning the stuggle between Julius Caesar and Pompey. Statius' subject - the legendary civil war between the Theban King Oedipus' sons Eteocles and Polynices - is a study in the futility of such wars. Statius was widely admired during the Middle Ages and Dante employed him as his guide through Purgatory in his Divine Comedy. McNelis' monograph considers strategies employed by Statius to achieve resolution of fratricidal warfare.

Buch
Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. Very light shelfwear else fine. ; This study focuses on ways in which Statius' epic Thebaid, a poem about the civil war between Oedipus' sons Eteocles and Polynices, reflects the theme of internal discord in its narrative strategies. At the same time that Statius reworks the Homeric and Virgilian epic traditions, he engages with Hellenistic poetic ideals as exemplified by Callimachus and the Roman Callimachean poets, especially Ovid. The result is a tension between the impulse towards the generic expectations of warfare and the desire for delay and postponement of such conflict. Ultimately, Statius adheres to the mythic paradigm of the mutual fratricide, but he continues to employ competing strategies that call attention to the fictive nature of any project of closure and conciliation. In the process, the poem offers a new mode of epic closure that emphasises individual means of resolution. ; 214 pages.
