a large collection of black & white photographs by this famous photo-journalist who has travelled widely in Africa. The theme of these images is Eritrea before liberation. The photographs were displayed at 2 exhibitions :- The Struggle Which Created Modern Eritrea , July 22-26th 2014 and The Journey of Eritrean Women, Tradition to Modernity, 21-28th Nov. 2015, both at The Gallery, near Nyala Hotel, Asmara. The photographs fall into 4 categories : 19 extra large cabinet-size images from the Women's Exhibition, frame size 50x70 cms, image size 40x60, on photographic paper, depicting women's lives in war, work, politics, education, mainly rural; 30 similar cabinet-size images of the military & political struggle in Eritrea including trench warfare, weapons, suffering citizens, the role of women; 21 large images (paper size 30x45 cms, image size 25x38 cms) of the military struggle and the suffering it caused, especially to women; Spares & Miscellaneous including 10 images (average size 41x31 cms) of rural life, 11 press photographs (31x25 cms) by Papstein of town & village life (one of him taking a picture), 11 posters & an acetate (30x40cms) advertising the exhibitions : Papstein's photographs are striking, sensitive & present the human face of all the agony in Eritrea; these photographs form the basis of his 1991 book "Eritrea, Revolution at Dusk" which covers the desperate but determined efforts of Eritrea to establish its independence and self-develoment.
