Near contemporary vellum; (first folding plate in the Atlas largely torn to image, marginal foxing throughout, otherwise good). Stamped on title from the reference collection of Shadowbrook Library, the former Jesuit novitiate in Lenox, Massachusetts. It was built in 1893 for Anson Phelps Stokes. In 1956, the 100-room house devastatingly burned beyond repair. A stamp on the rear of the title is dated Jan. 13 1958, this volume evidently a survival or a later addition when the new novitiate was established. Throughout the middle Ages, ancient gems were highly valued as intrinsically precious objects, as amulets or even as possessing magical properties. During the Renaissance, large collections of gems were formed by aristocratic collectors who sought inspiration from the classical images engraved on them, and gems have been collected for similar reasons ever since. Giovanni Battista Passeri, well known Italian antiquarian, wrote several essays examining these gems and as a result creates a kindred but exaggerated development as regard to legend versus historicity. These titles are of utmost rarity the combination or separation of the individual texts is scarcely found.
