First edition hard back binding in publisher's original full scarlet leather covers, raised bands to the spine with gilt title and author lettering between, all page edges gilt, thick silk water-marked end papers. 4to. 10½'' x 7¼''. The 2003 English edition of Wrecked On A Reef (1869) has additional appendices by French scholar Dr Christiane Mortelier who presents a case for the influence of Raynal's book on Jules Verne's 'The Mysterious Island'. Wrecked On A Reef was very popular at the time of publication, being translated into multiple languages. According to Mortelier, Verne read Raynal's account and loosely based his novel on the true life story of shipwreck, survival, privation, and ultimate rescue. Contains tissue-guarded portrait frontispiece; [viii]; double page map, 374 printed pages of French text with 40 full-page single-sided woodcuts drawn by A. de Neuville. Light foxing to the end papers, corners very slightly rubbed and in Very Good clean and smart condition. Member of the P.B.F.A. FRANCE [Literature & History).
