Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: vg. First edition. 8vo. lxxxi, 239pp. Original gray cloth with gold lettering on cover and spine. Printer's label on spine and title-page. Based on a series of articles printed previously by the Hebrew Union College Annual, this work examines the views on prophecy of two important medieval Jewish thinkers, the 12th century Moses Maimonides and the fifteenth century Isaac Abarbanel. Maimonides believed that prophecy was a natural product of the refined philosophical intellect, placing philosophers as the essential figures in religion. While ideologically conservative Abarbanel saw prophecy as a divine miracle performed for the faithful, maintaining the traditionally pious as the essential figures. Alvin Jay Reines engages in a close analysis of the key chapters in Maimonides' "Guide for the Perplexed" and Abarbanel's commentary on these chapters. Head and tail of spine slightly bumped. In fine condition.
